I've got the Crane double valvespring tool, push rod length checker, compressed air to hold the valves up, but no tool to hold the lifters up. I've never used a tool to hold the lifters up. Spin the cam a few times before you pull it out and the lifters stay in their cups (at least this is how it is on Vettes).

I didn't even attempt to try to spray it with the trans acting the way it was. I think I have an FLT Level 5 trans lined up, got to call tomorrow on it. Can't say I 100% agree on this. The 60 has design flaws and limiting factors but can be built really well, it just takes a special person to do it. If you are saying the average Joe cannot rebuild and make a 60 last at 5-600 hp levels then i would probably agree. I think I recall some other posts by you downing the 60. Are you a 60 hater? Do you just hate autos in general? Whats really going on with your hatred towards this transmission?

Holy large posts batman! Lets start at the beginning. 160 and 180 thermostats work well. It's all in the fan settings. You have to make sure that the fans turn on and off when they are supposed to. Is it worth extra bucks for a 160...matter of opinion. I think it was possibly a fluke that the fellas oil temp was up 20 degrees. That doesn't make any since what so ever if the fans came on at 165 which is where they should be when installing a 160 thermostat, the temps shouldn't get any higher than 180. Same, if installing a 180 thermostat, and setting fans to 185, the water temps shouldn't get any higher than 200. So, how can the oil temp be higher? Like I said possibly the fans weren't adjusted properly or other conditions were different as well.
4l60s can handle plenty of power when built right. I personally went through 5 of them though. The last one has lasted in Blue Thunder which runs 10.2s for approx 6 years now without missing a beat. It's called learning the hard way to buy the right part the first time. 4l80s are stronger, but if you go with the right tranny for your set up, you could be good for a long time.
Yes, when doing a cam swap, if you spin the cam first, the lifters should stay in the keepers, but do you really want to take the chance of dropping one and having to pull the heads? A great investment.....magnets. You won't drop the lifter until you pull the magnets out. Yes, I know these are on a Ford site and are a bit expensive, but they work awesome and are well worth the piece of mind! Used them more times than you can shake a stick at! As far as cam swaps Ive never used the roll the cam and hope the lifters stay up. I just use the alu rods or the wooden ones. Ive have had some years not let the rods go in so had to used a ton of little mag pens to hold lifters up. not the funest way. lol

I still have to disagree on it. Maybe it was done at different times of year, different outside temperature, different driving conditions, different under hood temperatures, different boost levels, longer periods of idle, etc.
I just don't see how cooler water temperatures equals hotter oil temperatures.
Again, not really worth the discussion since it's only a 20 degree water temp difference, it's just a mind boggling thing to me. I constantly study the effects of different conditions on these LS cars especially when I'm tuning them. So, I like to feed into my curiosity.

The temp of the thermostat doesn't have anything to do with the speed the water goes through the block, it only changes at what temp the starts/stops to flow. The only exception would be a thermostat of a different design. Which if we were talking about that, would have nothing to do with the temp rating on it.

Even with the air tool you should still be using the TDC method as a safety back-up. You dont wanna have to pull a head to retrieve a valve.

I've heard running a low stat, like a 160 or so, can make the car run hotter. Just like not running a stat, or one that stays open most of the time, can do the same. If ts flowing too fast through the radiator it doesnt have time to cool down. A lot of the guys I work with dont run them, but do run restrictors where the stat would normally be. They said they have to play around with the right restrictor to get the temp just right, too large or too small a hole will make the cars run hot. Theres a few threads on here about it. I was pondering the same thing when I had trouble with my car. I ended up just putting the stock stat in. Of course this is all stuff I have just read too. When I had the guts busted out of my stat, it ran cool as hell. Guys here on tech said it would run cool in the winter, and even hotter during the summer. So cool it would have a hard time keeping the inside warm when its cold out

I think mine were about 3ft. The magnets work good but the rods are much better IMO. No chance of dropping a lifter. I've done somewhere around 10-15 cam swaps and never had one that all the lifters would stay up on. We always had at least one that wanted to fall. It doesn't matter how many cam swaps you've done, those back four springs suck the big one though.

I ran fats and skinnies for 5 years on Blue Thunder. It was fine for driving. However, things to consider. Have to be extremely careful when cornering, hitting pot holes, big bumps, and stopping.
Everything will dent or warp the skinny front rims. They are not strong.
It is very difficult to stop quickly if you need to. Forget about your ABS working because you will be running two different sized tires which means they rotate at different speeds.
Lastly, if you like to drive fast all of the time, the skinny front tires are not designed to run at high speeds for very long. Could be quite dangerous.
That all being said. I did it for over 5 years. Never had any problems (a couple of scares though). Car looked awesome and always "hooked" on the street whenever the occasional challenge happened.

Nice..My coils and backets were the same when i had stock valve covers. I have sheet metal covers now so just have red coils.
As far as drag wheels. Been on mine for a few years love them. Better mpg and cheaper tires. I run normal street tires on front and rears. It sucked with MT sportsmans. It pushed in corners and just sucked everywhere. I have no front sway bar too and i still go Around on ramps as fast as most. Handles beter then most trucks/vans do. Your suspension helps alot. My car is a dd and see's many 400+mile road trips sometimes 900 miles one way. Even drove it it snow and ice. Main thing i look for is pot holes but Ive hit some good ones and so far so good. Ive had to stop hard a few times. So hard the air dam was on the ground and that was in rain. So stoping feels good on mine. Ive had mine up to 160 few times not the smartest and 120-140 a lot. But i get to speed and slow down. When i travel i run about 70~80mph on around 350mile non stop. For me its fine and safe. But its all on how u drive and like. i grew up racing on dirt so no big deal to me lol
I run 15x4 165/80s and 15x10 295/50s 26.6x11.6

Very nice!
My car was on 15x3.5 up front and 15x10 with 7.5" backspacing on rear. It does require grinding or spacers. Grinding makes you legal incase the NHRA tech guys actually care enough to look. Spacers are illegal. But, most inspectors don't look that hard.
275/60/15s in rear, and 185r15s up front. As you can tell in my photo, they looked great and tucked up great!
Don't get me wrong, I never personally had any problems with mine. I actually came into a corner waaaaaayyyyy to fast at the end of a street race in Atlanta. I nailed the brakes and had to make a turn. I knew for sure the wheels were going to buckle, but didn't. I also ran without a front swaybar. No real problems. Just stating you will have to be careful and be aware of these things if switching to this type set up.
If you don't want to grind, you will have to go with the Weld XPs or some Bogarts. But, you then end up with 16 and 17 inch rims with tires that are more expensive.

Ive never worried about front runners. Ive seen a 3.5 inch pro star slam to the ground from about 3ft and they were fine. Ive also hit many of pot holes with front runners and never had a problem. Im sure there would be a issue if you run a lowprofile tire but thats not the case. Ive also took some hard corners, drifts, and doughnuts with front runners and never had any problems at all. The front wheels are stronger than most think. Only time ive seen any get messed up was from a curb or a car rolling over. Just my .02.

Tool Explanation
drill press: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching
flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the
chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the
freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner
where nothing could get to it.
Wire wheel: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'oh sh -- '
electric or pneumatic hand drill: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age.
Skill saw: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.
Pliers: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.
Belt sander: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.
Hacksaw: One of a family of cutting tools built on the ouija board
principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable
motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more
dismal your future becomes.
Vise-grips: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.
Oxyacetylene torch: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.
Table saw: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.
Hydraulic floor jack: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.
Band saw: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.
Two-ton engine hoist: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.
Phillips screwdriver: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out phillips screw heads.
Straight screwdriver: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.
Pry bar: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or
bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.
Hose cutter: A tool used to make hoses too short.
Hammer: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
Utility knife: Used to open and slice through the contents of
cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly
well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic
bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic
parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in
use.
Damm-it tool: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'damm-it' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

I just wanted to make a thread to show the progress pics of my roll bar install. There were a few things that were kinda tight, such as putting some of the plastic parts around the seat belts and such but overall, it was a fun and fairly easy install.
At the same time, I went ahead and installed the Boost-by-speed control box that ties into my Eboost2 boost controller.
Enjoy the pics.

After almost 30k miles and god knows how many track passes, my Spec 3 finally started slipping. Looks like a couple of months of driving the s-turd til I can figure out what clutch I wanna get next. Definately a full disk this time. The puck style isn't really street friendly, but it grabs like a champ.
Has anyone used cosmo on these late model clutches?

Hilton is running one. He took one up for a core for him to use and he re-lined it. I think the price was good around $250 or so. Last time I asked Hilton about it he said he was pleased. But, let's be honest here, if you ever plan on putting slicks back on your car and dumping it on the line at 6k, the clutch builder should know that up front. That takes a special kind of clutch to handle that.
