Default 2-series carrier question - need advice

I have a dilemma I need help with. I have a 2-series carrier on the car, and of course I have 2.73's but I am going to install 3-series gears. I have a 3 series rear end in my garage.

I have some Motive 3.42s in my closet but they're not the thick gears so I can't use them on my current carrier. Should I get a spacer (i heard they suck), should I just install my 3 series carrier and use my Motives, or should I buy 3 series thick gears and use them in my current carrier?

I posted this in the Gears and Axles forum but I wanted my peeps advice on this as well. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks

I would honestly just look for the 2 series gear set to make things easier. When you say carrier are you saying you only have a 3 series posi unit? Or do you have the whole rear end.

In that case use the 3 series rear and get the 3 series gear set. 3 series rears are much more common since they are used in m6 and a4 cars compared to just a few a4 cars having the 2 series. This is JMO though. If you have problems your will have better luck finding the 3 series parts.

I really want to get my cam and spray installed and then worry about the rear. I'm not gonna drive it hard, just at the track a few times and hopefully it'll hold but the 10 bolt is not gonna stay long term. I just want to get my cam and spray on the car first..

i'm sure i'll grenade my rear too - just hope i eat up my gears before my stock tranny
