first, what modifications have you done to your motor?

second, what is the temperature of the weather where you are at, out of curiousity?

third, explain how you were driving the car, ie, racing, hard, spirited, and for how long before you start hearing these "tapping" sounds?

Pre-detonation will destroy your motor, however your computer is designed to pull timing to compensate for poor fuel or detonation issues. i suppose if you wanted to check and see if the problem was detonation or not, you could try picking up some higher octane fuel and mix it half and half with premium to see if your pinging goes away. if you had someone with a diagnostic computer or efi-live, HP-tuners, etc. etc. or just a data-logger that can read the computer, that would tell you if your knock sensors are picking up detonation.

Ive got the same sound (ping).
Happens Only under full throttle, and only past 4000rpm.

99 TA 150km's with;
Just got a custom tune done (obviously didnt solve problem)
LS6 intake
Wisper Lid
Ported Throttle body
New 180* thermo (stock was 195)
TR55's are about 1yr old
MSD wires are 2 yrs old
Coils -stock origional
91-94 octane.
Cleanned Mass air sensor with Throttle body cleaner spray.
SeaFoamed using vacuum hose tecnique.
Had injectors cleanned at dealership.
Here's another thing: I had a diablo sport Predator Tuner, with it I tried the following; Added 10% more fuel - no change.
Retarded all the timing possible -no change.
Fan On temps I believe are at 200*on
Everything else is stock.

I think Im gonna check the timing chain and replace it with a LS2 versoin and try that before the heads come off.

Any other ideas? I have checked everything it seems.

It is perfectly fine to use an LS6 cam in an LS1, you will gain some hp and it will be 100% as drivable as a stock cam.

Very hard to diagnose a noise, with no details.
