Default End of high hp cars?

Gas regulations are now requiring auto manufacturers to produce vehicles with an avg of I think it said 35mpg in the article. Walking out the door at work but what do y'all think about this MSN article??

I think this will open the door to electric powered flying cars...
we need to get away from gas engines.. and get into flying cars..

**** back to the future said we would have flying cars by 2012..
LOL

for real now:

yes that will suck big *****.. I dont understand the selling point..
IE... Here is our new Z06 vette, that gets a wooping 163hp, and 35mpg...
WTF.. who would buy that...

I think this will work about 1 year... Kind of like the early 80's camaro
the california edition camaro that got the 305 in it.... or whatever it was.
that was the gas saver??
LOL not...

its not the car that has to be 35mpg its the adverage oof the whole line up. so they can still make low mpg car just have to have a bunch of economy car to ballance.

but it still sucks cause it might drive companies away from making high per. cars

If you put Billary Clinton in office she wants to raise that even more..

this doesnt mean anything, we still have our current cars and they will just find a way to get around it and/or make the current fuel management system that much better. Or theyll do a couple things that will bring down the hp that can be easily pulled off upon purchase to get the full potential.

I think we all knew this day would come. The end of the high hp era and high hp cars in general so that we can make way for newer, more environmentally friendly technology.

While on the topic though, did y'all know the price of wheat is up 10%? This might sound like no big deal, but farmers are growing so much more corn the market demand for all other agriculture is going to skyrocket. Here's the BIG deal though. I forget the actual statistic but did you know that to actually produce and manufacture ethanol fuel, it actually takes 2 parts gas to 1 part whatever they use to manufacture it?? This means they actually use/consume more gas in the manufacture than the total ethanol output. This is sort of like a millionaire investing in dollar bills and buying them for $2 a piece. This is a lose, lose situation for everyone...

******* hippies. I really don't care much about the environment and I shouldn't be forced to. In an effort to protest I will be doing the LEAST environmentally friendly things I can think of.

Yeah, nothing new. Same thing happened in the '70s and in the '80s. I thought then that the days of 300+ factory hp was over. Glad I was wrong.

I wouldn't say its over.... there are vehicles right now that don't pass the current CAFE regulations. Meaning that since they doesn't meet current regulations the manufactures choose to pay CAFE penalties rather than attempt to comply with the CAFE regulations. Then the manufacture passes the "Gas Guzzler Tax" to the customer, (which is included in the price of the vehicle) and can be seen on the window sticker.

This is still a possibility.... not necessarily the best.. I've seen some gas guzzler taxes exceeding $3,000 on Benz vehicles.

Like previously said, the author of that article conveniently fails to mention that the 35mpg rule is for the entire lineup of vehicles. Hell, he mentions CAFE, but he never tells the reader that it stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy. So, if the Corvette is rated at 25mpg, that means Chevrolet has to mass produce at least one vehicle rated at 45mpg. They can do that easily with a hybrid.

What I'm not understanding is why we're not seeing more Active Fuel Management engines. From everything I've read, the transition from 4 to 8 cylinders is seamless with the newer engines. That seems like a really easy way to give a car a high mpg rating, while not sacrificing the horsepower and torque when you're starting from a stop or at WOT.

Popular Hot Rodding featured the LH6 in a neat article about a year ago. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing something like this in a 5.7L, 6.0L, or higher displacement engine, crammed into the new Camaro's engine bay.

Look up electric sports cars. Electric cars are the future of performance. Linear powerbands and revs over 50,000 rpms. Sure it doesn't have the sweet sound of a V8, but it will be a hell of a lot faster.

keep in mind that everyone freaked out when they stopped putting big blocks in muscle cars... and the cars we have now are faster than those ever were. also keep in mind that new corvettes have triple the gas mileage of the ones from the 60's and put out 95% less emissions too.

i dont think performance cars are going away... this will just force the manufacturers to think differently. also keep in mind that performance cars sucked donkey ***** from the mid 70's till the early/mid 90's. with the exception of the ZR1, a corvette didnt have over 250hp again till the LT1 in 1992! i definitley dont think we'll have a depression of that magnitude again, maybe just a small recession, thats all.

Funny enough, Future Car is on Discovery and they're talking about future cars and the fastest future cars. It looks promising. Hydrogen speed.. And they've already built some flying car prototypes... sweet..

Luigi Colani - German speed freak who holds the current land speed record they said, built a car that breaks 300mph, 1500+hp.. fast ugly *** yellow street legal car

y'all have got to see this show. a battery powered car that broke 320mph by converting electricity from one current to a different current, spun the wheels at over 10,000rpm.. 300 mph is traveling 1 mile in roughly 5.6 secs... craaaazy

also - eco opal, diesel car, ran a 24 hr road course at 140mph avg speed @ 113mpg

holy fuggin ****... they made a hyrogen powered go kart with like 12 capacitors on it.. a capacitor is like a back up battery in a sense but it stores energy and releases it VERY quickly on demand. This is basically the future equivalent to nitrous. Instant torque.. this show is blowing my mind

I'm gonna recap all this in a new thread.. this is too crazy
