Was it making noise or smoking?

I would stay away from those pistons in the future.

Agreed!! You could try the Diamond pistons. I hear they are really good.

Weisco, JE, Diamond then Mahle.

That being said, I just had my motor rebuilt with Mahle pistons. And both my mechanic and machine shop have nothing but good things to say about them.

Looks like you were running flattops.

Question to internal experts - what caused the top of the piston to break off? Was it a problem with fly cutting? Meaning too deep, came too close to the ring land?

They are after market pistons so they should be valve reliefs cut from the manufacturer.

Could be a number of things that caused that.

Mahle pistons are forged/coated. Come dished(i think) or flattop. Look on one of the sponsors sites like SD's should give you specs on em there.

Damn that sucks. I know this sounds retarded but I hope something happens to my engine so I can forge it. I will never spend the money otherwise and since the engine will be out I will be more motivated and the Fiancee would understand more then lol.
The wedding will be put off baby until I forge my engine since its a priority with all my money...think that will work?

Good luck getting it back together.

If it don't work for this Fiancee, don't try it on the next one.

Go with Mahle. Thunder racing sells them. you are running flat tops with valve reliefs. They will probably have 2 choices for the depth of the fly cutting, for safety sake i would get the deepest ones and be sure you have piston to valve clearance so you stay away from as many problems as possible. They have an some dual coating process and my engine builder also recommended them for my 347 build which is almost done.

I cant believe that. those freakin pistons were over $1,000!! they were flat top Diamond pistons with valve reliefs.

Two common causes for a failed ringland on a good piston (and Diamond makes very good pistons) are:

1.) Ring end-gap set too tight, ends butt together at operating temp.

2.) Excessively lean fuel:air mix. Looking at the adjacent head chamber, that one appears to be slightly rich...whereas your failed chamber and piston crown show slightly lean burn conditions. Partially obstructed injector maybe?
