Default New Patriot Cam

I've searched and found references but no dyno yet or discussion of the strengths of this cam vs say the Patriot 226.

Specs are 225/229 580/590 114+4 vs.
226/226 585/585 112+2

So what do you think ? What set-up or uses favor the new cam vs. the 226 (or TR224, etc)

I have a 2002 LS!, stock heads with LTH and a free flowing intake. (This is in an RX7 so 2800#). I may add heads in the future but I need to get the car on the road first complete with road racing suspension for the track days I do along with street driving.

TIA,

Steve

The new cam has 3 deg less overlap (@ 0.050 specs), so it should idle a bit better, and get through emissions better, if you have to deal with that. The longer exhaust opens 5.5 deg sooner (@ 0.050 specs), so it should work better with more restrictive exhaust systems. The 1 deg shorter intake isn't going to make much difference, and the closing time is about the same, so the power band should be in a similar place to the 226 cam. Installed straight up (ICL @ 110 for both), either of these cams should peak in the 6000 to 6200 rpm range. Not sure about what lobes this cam is made with, perhaps there could be some more merit there.

I think the features of the new cam would be better idle, emissions compatability, and tolerance to restrictive exhausts. If you don't have emissions and have a good exhaust system, then I would not pull the 226 cam out for the new one. For those of us in CA, the new cam may show some promise.

Are these comments on the 225 cam or the 226? I'm particularly interested in the 225 myself, and I haven't really heard any reports about it's performance/driveability especially compared to the popular 224/224 .581/.581 cams. The price is certainly right. About $100 less than most others.

He's referencing the new 225 cam.

Sounds about right. I would hafta agree with his assessment here.

Although I know some about cams, I am not a valve timing event guru.

What I have learned over the years that more often then not, actual specs are important but what may be as important, if not more is the type of lobe the person is using. Newer lobe technology has come along way.

I agree with you on that one. Cam lobe technology has come a long way, and guys are making more power now than they were a few years ago, especially when vendors are designing h/c packages like the TFS combos that are making killer power now. However, I think its more about the combination of parts. A lot of people throw vendor "x" cam with vendor "y" heads and dont make the power they expect. I make good power with my old ASA cam, and will pair it up to a set of GMPP LS6 heads (which are designed to go together). I've talked to a few people running that setup making 440+ rwhp, so I have to assume its all in the combination, because that setup has been around for years, and is considered old technology.
Maybe Patriot came up with this cam because it works better with their heads than the 226 cam did. Hopefully, Patriot might jump in and post some more info about this cam!

Default It's a great cam!

I installed that cam in my 2004 Z06 in April....here's all the parts I have:

-AFR 205 w/64cc chambers
-Cometic 0.040" Gaskets
-Patriot Perf cam 225/229/.580/.587-114
-Cadillac lifters
-hardened 7.4" pushrods
-Powerbond Pulley
-Honker air intake
-BBK Shorty Headers ($399)
-Magnaflow x-pipe and mufflers
-New ERA Ported Stock TB

Still have stock LS6 intake manifold, rocker arms, stock Z06 cats. I degreed it in at IVC = 44' ABDC. It idles pretty smooth and has great power everywhere

WOW!! Nice #'s with shorty's and cats!!!! I see your from CA and cant, but If you could ditch those cats and get some lt's, I bet you'd pick up another 15+ rwhp!!! Either way, I'm sure you're happy

Wow! That's impressive! How is the driveability, specifically cam surge below 2k rpm?
