Gears & Axles - F-Body years 7.5 rear end ,What years enter change

What year F bodys 7.5 rear ends change out or a direct bolt up. I am going to start working on a 8.8 ford rear end but do not want to cut the axle tubs off my rear end will a 1988 IROC rear end bolt up to my 2000 WS6 TransAm and will the brake plates bolt up .I will youse my axles because of ABS&TC. I will up grade pos.& axles to 31 spline later.I been fabbing for 18 years now this coverion is not that hard. Just need some axle tubs to work with. <img border="0" alt="[evil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

82-92 (3rd gen) rears are a different width than 93-02 (4th gen) rears. I don't have exact numbers, but they are different. The 3rd gen rears are narrower.

Good luck with the project, I really like this 8.8 idea. Seeing as I need a rear for my IROC very soon (tuning it, adding a 150 shot and going for 10's), and I plan on doing a head/cam LS1 in the future, 8.8's might be the cheap way to go.

Yes thay might be shorter,But I just need the axle tubs.Is the control arms and the pan hard bar located in the same place .I will cut the axle tubs to fit the 8.8 that will give me the over all lenth <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Sorry I donīt know about 3rd gen rears, but I have aquestin for you. How are you going to attach a t/a bracket to the housing? If you have any pics please post them. Good luck w/your project.

Well I was going to cut the 8.8 axle tub about 3" from the stump and cut the tubs off a 7.5 that will fit my car proble off a 93 or newer F body at the right linth that will make the 8.8 the same linth as my 7.5 it will all ready have the brackits on it . I've came up with a 8.8 houseing I am going to desine a tork arm brackit for it . I have worked in a metal fab shop for 18 years now it should not be to hard. the 7.5 axles will fit the 8.8 28 spline carrer

So are you saying that the 8.8 allready has mounting holes for a t/a and you just fab a bracket on it that fits the f-body arm?

No it don't have holes in it.It all will be fabed out. Im going to try to fab one . it might take some time but i will.I will haft to find me a spare 7.5 to go by so I can set them side by side to get the right off set and depth that means alot.Becouse you don't wont it in a bind when installing it. That might put stress in outher places and thats no good .Stress shuold be spread out evenly.
