Default The muffler shop guy told me

I don't need a full catback because the stock pipes are 3" diameter after the cat, so all I need is a high performance muffler and tips. He said those on the MagnaFlow catback are 3" also (with 3.5" tips). Does this guy know what he is talking about? It seems odd he would try to convince me to spend less money...

usually exhaust shops tell you they cant do a job before you even tell them what you want done.

The stock pipes are fine, just swap out the muffler. They arent 3.0 after the cats either, its a 2.5 system.

Someone jump in if Im wrong, but ive been under my car enough to know its not 3.0.

2.75 to the muffler.

Some catbacks are pretty cheap. If you do more stuff over time you will want bigger pipe.

Yep, go with a 3" midpipe at least. The stock 2.75" midpipe before the muffler becomes your main restriction.

I had a muffler shop tell me exactly the same thing about three years ago. I took an entire cat-back to be installed, but he convinced me that the 2.75" pipe was just as good as the 3" in the kit. I think he just wanted to get off of work earlier or something Well he ended up just installing the muffler and tips, and I ended up with extra parts to try and sell. I regretted that error shortly afterwards. All that exhaust came off last fall in favor of a Loud Mouth. I did the install myself in my littl 1 1/2 car garage and couldn't be happier about it

A 3" pipe has a cross sectional area that is 19.0% larger than that of a 2.75" pipe. To me, that appears significant.
