Default Motor Swap

Ok guys, I have a friend that has a 55 chevy with a 98 LS1 that has some slight engine noise and $1000 that he wants to swap me for my LS1 out of my 01 Camaro. I plan on pulling my motor for a rebuild to get ready for my APS TT kit anyway.

So, what are the reasons not to trade? I heard that the 98 block is not as good what is your thoughts on that. Can I just swap the intakes so that I can keep my ls6 intake his EGR has already been bloked off? I have new heads for my motor but I know that the valve covers are different. How bout the coil mounts?

Anything else I miss?

i would not trade him, the 98 motors had oiling problems. keep yours and tell your friend to go find an lq4.

I wouldnt say the 98s had oiling problems, it's just that the 01-02s have a little better oiling design. Most is just hearsay.

I would not trade either. Build up what you have, let him rebuild his.

All the LS1 blocks are pretty much the same, the 98 is a fine block. Dont listen to the net BS.

98 blocks can only be honed out. 2001 blocks have thicker cylinder walls and can be bored out. So if the 98s block is worn out your looking at a resleeveing job.

I knew about the oiling issue. Don't know if it would be a problem or not, obviously GM thought it might be cause they changed it.

I forgot about the thinner cylinder walls. I already have pistons that are 3.905 bore. So, correct me if i am wrong but that is pretty much a deal killer.

i say sell him your motor outright and build a new one on an ls2 block you can get 2500 or so for your motor less if you keep thing like the intake, heads, oil pan, ect. or you could sell him your good short block after you get a 402 or something

Just found out that the guys motor is a 99 not a 98. I believe that the 99 still has the oiling issue but does it have thicker sleeves? Is the oiling issue something I should worry about? Keep in mind I am doing a forged rebuild for an APS TT.

I've never heard of any oiling issue. I know the block was redesigned but that doesn't mean that previous design was totally bad, because it wasn't. I've had 2 99s and a 98 and have had no issues with any of them.
