I would just get the 5.7 or he can even go with a LS1 stroker since both will look the same. If he's worried about smog but wants performance tell him to pay for a smog hookup or take the vehicle to a IMPORT smog station. I've done both and both have worked for me good luck!

to get a 5.3 out of a 4.8 all you would have to do is change the crank. boring the iron block to get 5.7L of displacement is possible, but a lot of people question the reliability of the block at that point.

regardless, he's still going to be spending a lot more money than just buying a complete 5.3/5.7

you can get a big engine to pass smog if you dont go retarted on the cam. call up some of the sponsors and talk to them about your goals and see what they suggest.

4.8 and 5.3 use the same block and bore, just a different stroke, to make a 4.8 into a 5.3 you would need the 5.3 crank, rods, pistons
