Default ARP Head Studs go by Block or Heads?

Quick question here... I searched and couldn't find much. When ordering ARP head studs, there are 2 listings, one 2003 and earlier, one 2004 and later. Common sense would tell me to go by the year of the head as the difference is most likely there, but I just want to make 100% sure before I order something.

Also, assuming I am correct, I have 2004 241 heads, but want to switch to 317 heads. If I order the 2004 and later studs do I have to look for a certain 317 head? I have an LQ4 block, 2002 I think.

Thanks,
Adam

No, the difference is in the block and the length of the studs.

Hmm, odd. So some of the bolt holes in the block are deeper on newer models? Seems odd since you don't gain any strength in a threaded hole after you have as much threads as the bolt is wide. Guess I'll double check the year on my motor. Technically you could use the 2003 and earlier studs on any block then, correct?

Thanks for the reply!

the 03 and earlier kit has 2 different size 11mm bolts in the kit, the 04 and up kit the bolts are all the short style. its the block that is different, not the heads. all the new blocks you buy now should be the 04 and newer style and require the short bolt kit.

you cannot use the older style kit on any block, 2 of them would stick out way too far on each head

Ahh so it's the other way around. Newer is shorter. So pre 2004 block = pre 2004 studs. Easy enough, thanks!

On a sidenote, then you could technically use the newer studs on any year, correct? Do they offer any strength benefits? I can't imagine the new way is any weaker...

no, because the older blocks have 2 bolt holes per side that are deeper than on the 04 blocks

no, the earlier blocks to outside bolt holes are swallower.......

i wouldent swear to it because its been over a year since I did heads on an older block but I thought the 2 outside bolts were longer, im pretty sure its the holes that have the head dowels in them, either way the point is they are different and you need to get the right studs for your application. if your block is 03 or older you need the set with the different long and short 11mm studs
