Default Cam Position Sensor?

I am in the process of replacing my cam in my 98 TA. I was reading the writeup on ls1howto.com and they make no mention of the CPS. Im assuming it reads the cam position based on that ridge that run around the back end of the cam. When i took the cam out i just pulled it out, and then pushed the new one back in, then i realize, if something is coming down in the groove i may have damaged it.....

so can u guys put me at ease here? how does the CPS work and does it actually come down inside the circular lobe at the back of the cam?

You didnt damage anything, The sensor is a magnetic pickup, it never comes in contact with the cam.
