im new to the turbo world and have been reading the stickies for the past few days to get a better understanding but still unsure about a lot of things...
ive been going back and forth about a turbo motor and i finally made up my mind.

i decided that i want to do a 408 iron block and would like to put out around 750rwhp with pump gas.

my question is what size turbo would be right for me and what all would i need to accomplish it (pistons, rods, cam and anything else you can help me with)?

im probably going with a th400 and this motor is going in mustang

thnkas a lot

That turbo will surely be easily over $1000 without a doubt if you get it from dam near anywhere, i can probably hook you up with a kit, PM me if you're interested.

I'm guessing that if you are doing an LS1 swap in a Mustang, this is a budget strip car, not a street car. If that is the case, your HP goals can be met with a smaller motor and a smaller turbo. By saying "budget", I don't mean you can't afford more, I mean "bang for the buck". As weird as it sounds, you can make the same HP with a smaller motor and turbo as with a bigger combo in some cases. The big differences involve streetability, which won't matter if this IS a strip car.

i want the car to be a nasty strret car but it will see a lot of track. i do though want to drive it on the street on weekends

of course u would want to go with forged rods and pistons, i would stay mild on the cam choice.Like the others said an 88mm should put u at your goals. To run pump gas u probably want to keep your compression around 9-1 . For the motor, most sponsors run specials from time to time so keep your eye open for that.

Since it's going into a mustang swap the hotpaarts will have to be custom made. I don't know of anyone making a kit for ls1 mustang. As for the motor a forged 370 ($2899) with a TC 76mm($1100). I would think this should get you to 700-750 rwhp.

You can do it with a S85. I Just hit 717rwhp on a LS2 402 on pump gas at 15psi on a TH400 tranny on a Superflow Dyno. Check my sig for specs.

are you stuck on a turbo?
as said above with fitment issues with the mustang conversion.
what about a F1R procharger?

thanks for the input guys.. i was actually thinking about going with a F1 at first but after riding in a few turbo cars i want something in the lines of that.

what would be a ball park firgure getting the turbo kit made for the car?

would the s85 spool fast on a 408?

For the most part a smaller turbo will spool up faster lower in the rpm range(kick in sooner), however smaller turbo's will lose power higher in the rpm band. The S85 would be good and spool very fast for you and stay spooling in the higher rpm range, not exactly sure when it will start dropping off. You should go between a S85 and a S91. I would talk with Jose at forcedinductions.com as they are very knowledgeable with these turbos. The S Series turbos are some of the best out there.

I am building the same thing as we speak. I am thinking about keeping the CR around 8.5.1 and running 15-18psi with meth. Then maybe turn it up to 22-25psi with more meth to race with. I just need to order the pistons and cam, assemble the turbo kit. I wanted to run a 88mm turbo. What or who would be a good person to have spec a cam for me? What would be a good ballpark cam to be with? I have Dart 225 heads out of the box. Also what is a good intake manifold to run with this setup ls6 or FAST 90?

Keep the LS6. The fast would be a waste of $$$
that's almost the turbo right there.

An S88 or S91 would be awsome on a 408.

A custom kit is going to be more then your basic kits.

When mine was done 2 yrs ago it was over $8k for justthe kit.

My 1st question I always ask is has your budget and time frame??

I can see spending $15-20K fast............

I guess I will go with the LS6 then, I was on the fence about getting the FAST anyway
