CClips fell out!!!??? Wtf???
Ok so here is the situation. Basically I had my 4.10's installed at a local reputable shop about 4 months ago. They have been doing good and I've put atleast 40 passes on them at my track on dr's. Anyways I decide to get a little more aggressive at the track since it will be my last time out with stock internals and I want low 12's before the cam goes in. So basically I make 3 passes and all seems well. I have gone 12.5 at this point and I'm about to do it big and drop the clutch at close to 4,000rpm. I have noticed however that my rear may be starting to choke because during my burnouts I have a slight wag side to side in the rear. Oh well I have a trailer and I'm willing to go low 12's or bust. Well I bring up the rpms to 3500 and launch and dead hook. POP!!! I assume I broke my ring and pinion so no big deal. I was able to still drive it to the trailer and load up. This was on Friday. Well today I just finished my cam install and decided to pop the cover on the rear to assess the damage. RING AND PINION IS STILL FLAWLESS AND MY POSI (ZEXEL TORSEN) IS FUCKED TO HELL. No big deal I guess I knew something would break. So proceed to pull the axles. I go for the right rear first. I undo the brake assembly rotor and tcs sensor. Before I have even pulled the steel dowel that goes in the posi out or removed any c clips I give the axle a tug. THE DAMN THING COMES RIGHT OUT WITHOUT REMOVING THAT DOWEL OR CCLIPS!!! I can't seem to find the c clip at this point but is this something that could happen when a posi breaks or do I know have a case to take up with that shop! The posi has broken teeth but it isn't demolished or anything and I cant find the c clip. Please let me know how this could have happened because that scares me I could have lost an axle at 112mph!!!

Well I'm gonna let it sit for tonight. Tomorrow I will be taking the gears and posi out for further investigation. The thing is, as of know the only fragments of metal I can find are posi fragments. There is no way that the cclip literally got ground into powder so I should have some bits of clip that will be easy to distinguish. It wasn't really a carnage type of break. I simply left the line and went about 1 foot and stopped and the car has only driven a max of 50 feet since then and no real noises are present except for the pop every rotation when the broken teeth on the posi line up again.
Here is a quick question and please don't laugh because I really don't know .
HOW LONG CAN AN AXLE STAY IN PLACE WITHOUT A CCLIP PRESENT?
Oh and Dave what do you mean by the "case" the posi case I assume right?

That's what I was thinking. All I can say is that when i pull the carrier tonight I better find some type of c clip fragments or things could get ugly. I highly doubt like I said earlier that the entire clip is ground into dust...

Check up in the pinion area oil passages. It is very common for parts to get slung up into the pinion area. I cannot see a c/clip being ground down like that. They are hardened steel. There would be some kind of carnage there.

Thanks Jeff. I'm gonna check all over and it will much easier to see when the posi is out. As of now I didn't see it up in the pinion oil galley though...

No problem, try using a magnet too. It will be there somewhere lol. I assume you are going to rebuild again or upgrade, either way let me know if you need anything or have any more questions.

Josh i dont think your posi did enough damage to throw a c-clip out honestly. Of course i havent seen it yet. And like a few have said there is no way it chewed up that c-clip. Something weird going on here.

Yea that's what I am thinking. I mean damn I drove the damn thing on the trailer and off the trailer and then like 40 more feet to the garage. The posi was 90% intact it just had chipped edges on most of the teeth. If I don't find my c clip tonight when the posi is out and after I run a magnet through both axle tubes then I will be bitching at some folks tomorrow morning...

This happened to me once in my 86 camaro. I was driving along about 65 mph and I felt the backend of the car drop. The axle shot out the car attached to the wheel still and stood straight up going right through my wheelwell. I got it back to shop and inspected the housing from what I could see there was some wear enough to allow the axle to move a little and let the c clip fall out.
