OK. So I was able to do the drivers side shock all by myself. I rented some spring compressors from Autozone and went to town. Now, the way I did, I'm not sure if it was the right or wrong way, but I tightened the shock mount all the way down till it was sitting on that big *** washer.

Now the passenger side that I wasn't able to do before, so I had to take to pep boys to get done. The guy there tightened the nut down, but it was not sitting down on the washer. I don't know if this was linked to the noises I would hear when I would go over bumps, but I was scared to take it for any further driving because I've heard of people breaking studs when the nut is not secured all the way down. My only reference to this is a post made by Sam, so I decided to tear down the passenger side to check for any play.

Is there a right or wrong way? Should I go through the trouble of compressing the springs to tighten it down further?

The one in the first pic looks wrong. I think the guy didn't turn the spring until it stopped in the rubber boot. Plus, there is a significant gap between the boot and the washer too, which is where your noise is probably coming from.

I had a shop do my shocks the first time. They didn't give much of a crap about how it came out. The shock setting slot was turned toward the inside of the car.

Can't trust anyone but yourself to get most jobs done!

Call up Koni and get a replacement part. This is exactly why i never let shops touch my car unless I'm in way over my head.

I'll try giving them a call in the morning. Well, anything short of sending them in to be fixed, is there any last ditch efforts I can try to do on my end?

I've been calling and leaving messages for Sam Strano, but he has not called back.

agreed with the statement above. a lot of the automotive industry is just about the cash now days. its hard to find people in shops that actually care.

Call Koni, they sent me out a new top part top of the shock for free no questons asked. Bad *** customer service

If you have no luck with Koni you can always try to tap those threads and get a new nut.

They're going to replace it for free.. Just had to pay for next day shipping, but that is okay!

That entire rod looked like it was welded on. I had no idea it could screw on/off.

With a name like Pep Boys, what else would one expect? No mechanic gets near my car unless I personally know the guy. It's like picking a doctor - you wouldn't want some witch doctor quack operating on your loved ones.

Ahh, is this Andrew Gill? If so I tried calling back, but the phone wouldn't work. Kept getting an automated recording that it was temporarily out of service.....

Not much I could do for you anyway. The threads are stripped, which is something that happens when that nut isn't tightened properly (have to be careful. Too tight will strip the nut or stud. Not tight enough leaves play between the shock and shock mount.
