Default 6L80 Questions

I did a search but did not find this info. Does anyone make a tailshaft housing for the 6l80 for a 2wd application? Also, are there any aftermarket controllers for it? Im interested in using this trans for a project involving a twin turbo'd 5.3 in a 80 malibu.

Why cant you use the stock tailhousing off of a 2wd 6l80?? And I think Speartech was doing a controller for it, not sure if they are done yet.

As far as I knew the only 2wd vehicle they used it in is the corvette, other than that its all 4wd. Am I wrong?

No aftermarket controllers being sold yet. If you're doing a TT, why not a built 80E? You won't need more than 4 gears with those power numbers... Shifting time is not accelerating time, eh? Plus even when they come out (I figure they will eventually but be different than people think), they will need a year or two to work out the bugs, just like the 80E did at the beginning.

Im a fan of the t-56, so to me it just seemed natural to get excited over a 6 speed auto. Looking at the gear ratio numbers, the auto is a lot lower geared in first. So with a stall 60 ft times should be pretty sweet, and seeing as how they come from the factory paddle-shifted in the vettes, I think it would be a fun and versatile trans for a guy who likes to do some road and drag racing.

On another note, I can get this trans from the dealer I work at for 1900. Thats cheap IMO. Hell, if I left it in stock form, installed it for myself at work, I could warranty it for 3 years/50000 miles.

With no details and a single picture, I wonder if they will use your order $$$ to finance their research. Call me jaded, but...

Other, larger companies have looked at this tranny and walked away for now. Maybe this one is different. Who's gonna be first?

GM will sell you complete tranny for 2 wheel drive, not a problem. You can go to Street & Performance web site and see what it looks likes. It's under XR15 6 speed.

No controller needed and Speartech has the Tap/Row/paddle shifting using a GM shifter working.
When I say no controller needed, I mean the tranny controller is built into it, but it has to be able to comunicate with your ECM. In my case the ECM I need to support my applaction is compatable with it. Wire harness is $300.00 dollars cheaper for it than if I used a 4L60/80 due to built in controller.

Now if he would just get Cruise control up and running.

You might want to look at 1st-6th gearing and make sure your rear end's drive ratio want need to be changed.

Stock Corvette uses 2.56 ratio with it and optional performance ratio is 2.76. If I did the math right a 6 sp manual corvette with 3.42 ratio would need about a 4.64 rear end ratio to match a 6L80 1st gear's ratio with a 3.07.

Gear ratios: MM6
First: 2.664
Second: 1.783
Third: 1.302
Fourth: 1.000
Fifth: 0.741
Sixth: 0.502
Reverse: 2.903
Final Drive Ratio: 3.420

Gear ratios: 6L80/90
First: 4.03
Second: 2.36
Third: 1.53
Fourth: 1.15
Fifth: 0.85
Sixth: 0.67
Reverse: -3.06

Gear ratios: 4L60E
First: 3.06
Second: 1.63
Third: 1
Fourth: 0.696
Reverse: 2.29
