Torquer V3 ONLY? or install PRC stg II 5.3 TOO?
Ok,
I have a 98 A4 with 3600 stall , stock gears, stock manifolds (planning on 4.10s after this project)
Sort of on a budget, I'm just wanting opinions out there.
Am I selling myself short by just doing V3 cam package only and Not heads???
Would I really be sacrificing that much?
I know I'd need in addition center bolt valve covers and coil pack brackets
I would be replacing the oil pump and timing chain during the cam install.
Would the LS1 intake be sufficient for cam only V3 or LS6 intake be desirable?
Car is not a DD a weekend play car at most. Car may see the track once a month. Goal for the car would be 400+rwhp
I was looking into the MS4 but TSP told me the V3 would tune out better in an Auto. Also have read on here the MS4 is soft down low.
Ideally I wanted to go the with TSP PRC stg II 5.3 heads and V3 cam package along with a fast 90 setup and headers, UD pulley. But now I am looking at expense and wonder would I be happy and content with just the V3cam itself and in the process saving a good $2000+ ????
Thanks ahead of time for all your input & suggestions

you are looking at the exact setup i have going in next week. TQR III and PRC 2.5 5.3's. ive been told many times that i will be very happy but i guess well see soon...
in the case of the intake, the ls6 will be MUCH more desireable. that cam has ~.645 lift on the intake but you wont be able to get much use out of that with the ls1. really though, if youre contemplating puttin the $2000+ into the setup, you can find an extra $325 somewhere.

1. Get headers first.
2. Cam package will net 50-60 rwhp with that cam. A 228R netted me 44 rwhp. Cam package with dual springs/pushrods /retainers/gaskets/plugs and install cost me $1600
3. Heads will net another 40+. Will run me $2400 with all parts and install. ('98)
4. LS6 intake is good for only 5 rwhp. Why the constant recommendation is beyond me.

if you are on a budget i would do headers ory ls6 or similar intake and a 224 cam.....it will be a blast on the stock heads and later you can save up for some afr heads......for the 2k budget you listed it can easily be done....

Yes. It's a good jump, but the 98 heads flow like poop.

Compared to another stock head, 15 HP maybe.

Yep, all that stuff you will need.

Definitely look into getting a LS6 intake.

Cam only on the 98 heads and LS6 intake, you *might* break 400. I would guess 390-ish. Enough to make you want more.

Happy is something that you need to decide. I have no doubt you'll be happy for a few months, but as you get acustomed to the power, you'll want more. Heads and the FAST 90 setup will make your car scream. If you ever think you are going to do heads down the road, may as well do them now while your **** is apart.

98 valve covers
Thanks for the input guys.
I reckon I'll be saving the extra $ for the heads as well.
In regards to the valve covers, does anyone have a 99+ set for sale and the coil pack brackets?
I did a little searching, can't seem to find the part number for say a 99 ls1 valve cover. Anyone know the part #'s
I also see different LSx valve covers with different PCV setups (example a LS6cover would work but has different pcv setup)
Hopefully some one on here will have everything coming up for sale.

Good luck I love this cam. With the 5.3s I'm sure it will kick ***.
LS6 intake for sure, my buddy put the 228r in with the LS1 intake and after we swapped it for the LS6 he picked up 12rwhp.

We typically see about 40rwhp gains from the heads! If there's enough money available I'd look to the heads cam as a package! Besides they're on special!!
