Default How hard is it really ?

Alright guy's, ive done a lot of work on my 94 LT1 Z but have never changed the oil pan gasket. But of course its now time. I was at the track teching In as was turned away because i was dripping from the front of my pan. What all needs to be dropped and moved out the way? What are the little techniques you have used to make it easier on the A4

do the motor mounts while you're there and plus you are gonna be unhooking them.

jack the engine up from the bellhousing and keep it up there about 2" above where it usually sits mounted.

i just did mine this winter while I was doing the h/c swap, and put a new oil pump in also. I am an m6. It was not a fun job. I jacked the motor off the mounts as much as I could, then loosened all 6 K-member blots just enough so they did not completely unthread. take off the starter, and flywheel cover and all the oil pan bolts, also you will have to remove the oil cooler if your car is equipped with one. Its definetly not a easy job and if you are not a mechanically inclined person you should not try doing it. and another good tip is to take out the oil level sensor first, i didnt my first time and broke it.

its just a pain laying under the car, trying to get a good bead of rtv on it, and set it in place without messing the rtv up, I had to do it twice because the first gasket slid and screwed up the silicone. its a job that I would not like to do again, if someone was only going to charge me 200 to do it I would jump all over it, that would of prevented me from waking up at night in a cold sweating dreading doing it.

djjab57, If you're only leaking from the front (where the oil pan and timing cover mate) you may get away by only changing the front rubber gasket not the complete oil pan set. To change it you have to remove all the front pan bolts leaving the the rear bolts intact. Then carefully pop the front of the oil pan down about 1/2 inch or so, wedge a screwdriver handle or something soft to hold it open. Throughly clean and dry the mating surfaces, trying not to drop anything into the pan, then apply RTV and new rubber seal.

With the prothane mounts and pacesetters long tubes you will get a lil bit of rubbing from the steering shaft upper bolt. At least I do but I have 3+ year old pacesetters and they mave have changed the design. Brad

Are we not liking the one piece rubber oil pan gaskets from Fel-Pro (and I'm sure others) that don't require RTV?

BTW, the Garmin might actually lie I think when you're going that fast, it's going to have a hard time distinguishing your actual speed. When I had a GPS for a few days, I liked that feature but found that to actually get it to read my actual speed, I had to be driving the same speed for about a minute. (Sorry to go off topic heh)
