Unhappy 480E in a 2500hd whines in 1st gear Need help

I have a 05 Chevrolet 2500hd with a 6.0 gas engine. When the truck is in 1st gear, it has a loud whine. It goes away once it shifts to 2nd and all other gears. Is this normal or something that should be fixed? The dealer said they could put new planetaries in it but there is a chance it will still whine. Is this something I should have them fix? Since it is doing this will it cause it to fail in the future? Seems like it has gotten louder since I have had it. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

SBP

It could easily be an oiling issue such as a partially clogged cooler. It might be wise to check the cooler flow.

If it has spur or straight cut planets they will be noisy. Some factory HD units were equipped with them.

They do this in variying degrees, And some even have a damper ring on the rear planet to help prevent it, While I cant say the OP has no issue without hearing it. I wouldcheck cooler flow and if all is good there I would not worry about it.

If it's the humm or whirr as it sounds in my truck it has been doing it for 345K with no ill effects. Don't sweat it. I take it this is probably a truck you just bought.

I have had the truck for over year. But seems I notice it more now than ever. Also has the sound on real cold days as soon as it starts.
