Default 59cc Chamber, advice please...

I have a post in the internal Gen II, but you guys are more familiar with our project (2002 LS1/T56 into a 67 Camaro). Looking for a little advice, as some of you know, I cannot pass up a good deal, even if it wind sup costing me more later...

I ran accross a set of lightly used Patriot LS6 stage II heads, and had to buy them. The price was too good.

Combustion Chamber: 59cc
Intake Runner: 227cc
Exhaust Runner: 70cc
Intake Valve: 2.055"
Exhaust Valve: 1.57"
Valve Guide Material: Manganese Bronze
Valve Job: 5-angle

They come with 317 springs instead of the originals, part of the good price. As most of you know, we still have a stock (or very close to it!) cam in the engine. Not really interested in changing the cam yet, looking to do that after the car has seen a dyno, but wondering how these heads will work out on the stock short block with a stock cam. We run 92 octane non-oxygenated fuel only. Patriot claims an 11:1 SCR when installed on an LS1, but it may be a hair higher than that since they also show a 10:1 for the stock LS1, which is really a 10.2:1.

The trans is at Six Speeds, and we are waiting on the new rear, so this might be a good time to putz with the engine a bit. Is this a good idea remembering that we will change cam later, (though nothing crazy), and that this is NOT a track car, but a fun toy to play with???

Finally, remembering that we are only looking to fall in the 360-400hp range, what would be a good streetable cam that would compliment these heads?

I would give Patrick G a PM. He spec'd out a really nice cam for me a year ago. I have the exact same heads on my other engine, however my goals were a bit more agressive than yours.

I run 59cc TFS heads (milled) and a 10:1 flattop forged bottom end in the Camaro.

If it's not a track car, and you're only looking for 400hp (easy target, you'll make more) I'd go more for the idle quality and usable RPM range you want. Pretty much any cam you stick in that thing bigger than 220 degrees intake duration is going to put over 400 to the tires, so your options are pretty wide open.

"Streetable" means something different to everyone, so it's pretty tough to imagine exactly what you really want

The car does a lot of idling getting set up for shows, cruises, and whatnot. A little spirited fun on occasion, but overall, it isn't driven too much harder than my truck. She does get a little heavy on the gas once in a while. Just looking to keep it fun, and keep the low end there. Never liked compromising the low end on a street car.

Sounds like you want something reasonably small'ish. The ever popular 224 degree named cams (about every vendor sells one with their own little moniker) would probably be right up your alley. On a 114LSA you'll have a nice, broad torque curve with plenty of low end torque. It'll peak in the neighborhood of 6000 RPM, and make right around the 400RWHP mark give or take based on the other pieces (headers, exhaust, etc.). It'll have a nice burble at idle, not too choppy but enough for people to take notice and love the sound. It'll idle all day long without issue at the stock 800 RPM idle speed, and cruise down the freeway in 6th gear without any hint of surging. Plenty of vacuum for the brakes too.

Did a quick search, here's a member's (z28ss4me) dyno sheet of such a cam with stock heads:

220anything on a 114/115. 224/228, 228/232. Both would be real nice mild cams. Good valve springs with adequate clearance to run close to .600 lift. You'll want the lift to be in excess of .580 at least.

Does this mean you are finally going to replace that S&P HAI with something that'll get cold air into the engine? I expect you're down 30-40HP sucking hot air from the radiator.

In the works rodder. We are slowly starting the upgrades now that we will finally have a sturdy driveline. Wish that rear end would get here!
