Default C5, C5 Z06, C6, C6 Z51, or C6 Z06 Rotors, Calipers

Looking to upgrade my 1994 25th Anniversary Trans Am with 18" Replica C6 wheels and big brakes. I am interested in one of the many Corvette caliper conversion brackets available, and it looks like they are all good for C5, C5 Z06, C6, C6 Z51, or C6 Z06 brakes. Has anyone ever spelled out the difference with all these options? Ultimately I want drilled rotors, and red calipers. Can anyone help? And then what does everyone do for the rear brakes to match the front? How big do Vette rear brakes get?

All the calipers, except the C6 Z06, are the same, sans the color.

Z06 brakes aren't that great, very expensive, not worth the trouble.

That leaves base C5/C5 Z06/base C6 vs C6 Z51. The C6 Z51 is .5" bigger, which requires 18" wheels. If you aren't racing, then base stuff is fine and cheaper. The issue with the Z51 stuff is last I checked, no one made after market rotors for it; you had to buy OEM rotors, which are pricey.

The stock rear brakes are fine, no need to change anything. The C5/C6 stuff is practically the same size, so it's not an upgrade.

Cool. No racing, my 25th is mostly a weekend cruiser / show car, I just want the size upgrade because my stock stuff will look rediculous with the new wheels.
Thanks.

If you want to fill the wheels out the most, the C6 Z51 is the better (if slightly more expensive) option. You can use C5 Z06 calipers (which are already red) or paint any other base caliper yourself. You need C5 adapter brackets, plus the C6 Z51 pad brackets (plus pads, rotors, lines, and whatever else I forgot).

Great, thanks again. Just curious, what's different about the Z06 brakes that aren't that great? I wonder if the new ZR1 brakes would fit?? Looks like the calipers are already blue which would match the 25th Anniversary theme very well.

The calipers are OK, it's the padlets. The Z06 stuff uses 6 individual padlets in the front. They are expensive and wear quickly and unevenly. Some guys have gone through a set of padlets in 1 day (and then have to drop $300 for a new set).

I would *think* the ZR1 stuff would work, but those ceramic rotors are going to be REALLY expensive. I know on Porsche's the ceramic rotors are $4700 EACH. I'm sure the Chevy ones will be cheaper, but even at 1/4 the cost, thats over a grand a rotor. You can do one hell of a Stoptech/Wilwood setup for the cost of a pair of rotors. I guess you could try and find an iron rotor, but a 15" iron rotor would be heavy.

I would go with Base C5/C6 or Z51 C6. Proven, cheap, and on the street you will never even approach the limits of the brake system.

just do the umi/bishop c5 brakes. i've piece my setup together and I'll be under $300 for all "new" stuff. some guy is on ebay selling loaded front right calipers w/ the brackets for $75 each, buy 2 of those since you get pads and the bracket, sell the caliper, put it on the shelf, etc. buy 1 left caliper for $55 from the other guy(all this stuff is new not rebuilt from the looks of it), 2 new rotors are $90, look around you can grab the brackets for under $150, i found mine for $75. all i need now is bolts.
you really can't even upgrade the stock stuff for that price.

wrong, they have larger rotors and a different casting on the calipers. the larger rotors help dissipate heat better and the calipers are great for slamming on your brakes multiple times.

They might be, but there is no need for them. Most people have serious issues with brake hop (myself included). I run race pads in the front and street pads in the back to help control the brake hop.

There is no performance reason to 'upgrade' the rear brakes, as the stock brakes are more than enough for even serious road racing abuse.

I have the C6/Z51 brake discs. They are aftermarket.
They are still pretty pricey compared to other corvette brake discs.

Have you considered doing a SSBC Force 10 4-piston caliper, 13" brake kit?
It uses a C4 13" brake disc. Plus they have a one year warranty on the product.

I don't know........I'll have to do some more research to see what those are. Again, this isn't my race car, mostly show, but it still needs to look kick *** and of course dominate the occasional rush hour when I decide to take it to work.
