Default Thunder 224 best cam? Stock heads, 6500 shift points, A4 Vig 3600, nice idle

The car is an '02 Z28 A4, 3.23s. Car should be full bolt-ons with 3.23s, Pacesetters w/ cats, stock exhaust w/ cut-out and Vig 3600. The car is not my daily driver but I still want a drivable cam. I'm not interested in a huge bucking/stalling/surging cam but it doesn't have to be LS6-cam smooth either. FWIW I had a old school T1 grind in a previous Fbody with a mail order tune and that was fine. That was a 112 LSA and it probably wasn't as smooth as it could have been because I never had the car dyno tuned.

Anyways I'm pretty convinced RPM kills A4s so I don't want a real high strung cam. I'm thinking something in the 6100 peak power range, shift points no higher than 6500. The car will have a raceweight of ~ 3500 lbs.

From everything I read on here it seems the old school Thunder 224 would be the best cam for this application but I know their have been so many advances in the LS1 world since that cam came out years ago. So with that in mind, what other sort of cams do you guys suggest? I do plan on keep stock heads.

Thanks!!

I like my tr 224 probly would have gone bigger but that dosent mean it would have been faster.
224/224 114 (not as loapy but better idle)
3200 stall
3.73
got me 12.005 @113

Is that full weight? What sort of weather?

With the 114 LSA, is that pushing your powerband up a little higher?

With the exact setup your planning minus a cam my stock internal stock geared stick suspended 98 Z28 has run 12.1-12.2's @109-110 with 60" in the 1.64-65 range.... I have the same converter as you but I am about 100-140lbs lighter than a stock leather hardtop Z28....

There is a guy in the 11 second club in the drag racing section who was running 11.4's @115 in the 1/4 with a full weight SS running a 3600 vig and a Patriot 226/226 cam... Car was doing excellent for the minimal mods and the guy weighs around 260lbs....

the 224 is a nice cam. i used to have a 99 ss with a 3500 stall, tr224 and boltons. on nittos it went 12.20s with no tune and full weight.

its one of the best cams out there for an auto car that sees a lot of street use.

I think that picking a cam can be a crap shoot but it all depends on alot of factor on how the car preforms. I've herd of several small cams get into the 11's and several that dont same with the larger cams, so thier is no magical cam that will automaticly get you in the 11's.

but im running the MTI X1 230/227.

you can never go wrong with the 224 cam for a street car.

I have his old car, the 224 cams are great. I did see some nice gains throughout the RPM range & peak by going to the Speed Inc SI5 (231/237), the car is still VERY street friendly.

I got a MTI X1 on a 98 z28 and it was a very nice street car due to the reverse split, good luck

Kenny throw a MS3 in there, you will not be disappointed. The bucking and surging is a tuning issue that Alvin can fix for you. You know you want to be just like me and Joey.

MS3 wouldn't be my thing at all. I want to be able to drive this thing back home 550+ miles to NJ without a thought or hesitation. I don't want to deal with valve spring issues and I don't want to spin the motor any higher than 6400-6500 max.

I'll leave the 10 second passes to you guys :-)

You could do a TSP or TR 228 cam, that wouldn't be to bad. Or just spray the hell out of it.

Either way its a good idea to change out the springs and going with 918's at least you should'nt have any problems with moderate rpm's.

I thought that the 918 springs had some manufacture problems, and caused quite a few guys on here to rebuild or replaced their motors.

I like mine but it requires a bit of tuning for good street manners.

tr224 112 w/ss4000 verter..I love it. I havent actually been to a track, but I have beaten cars that go deep 12s on the street. Awesome cam. Add heads and you'll have an easy 400rwhp thats super reliable and has stock like manners on the street, not to mention ground pounding torque off idle.
