How do I descreen the stock MAF without breaking the screen so that I can put it back on later if I need to, or even sell it?

Why take it out at all?

I'm selling the ends and the guy doesn't need the screen so if I can remove it without damaging it, I can probably sell it.

Ha ha sell what the screen? I think your telling a FIB haha, Their is a time and a place to remove the screen and if you have to ask how or why then you shouldent do it.

I know when and when not to (95% of the time it should be left alone), but when I did it a long time ago, I could never get it out without breaking it. Someone out there might have a MAF they descreened a while back and now regret it because they broke the screen in the process. If I can get it out so that it would be able to be used again, I can see someone needing it. I hate to just throw something like that away.

I descreened mine and have never had a problem, even with an A4 but I'm not sure you can remove it without bending the shit out of it. Best bet would be to find something large enough to displace the force but not hit the meter itself, and push around the edges. Yet again, me and my buddies have ne er had a problem with descreened mafs. Both are A4's.

I would probably just leave it on there....it only takes that one time to really make you regret it....

I doubt anyone would actually pay for just a maf screen. Even if you could sell it, the $ you might make wouldnt be worth you trying to carefully remove it without damaging it. I say either leave it alone or pop it out and trash it. As long as you have a decent air filter and keep your lid sealed it wont hurt anything to remove it.

The guy I sold the MAF to said he didn't want it. I tried to take it out carefully, but still bent up the edges of the damn thing. I guess it really wasn't worth the trouble, but I still think it would have been a good idea if I could have done it perfectly.

Off topic, but you have Patrick G's old car don't you? I would leave that car how it is. Makes great power! Nice ride.

The MAF was an extra I had lying around from another TA, not this one. All I plan to do to this car is install an F1 Procharger and a 9" rear end.

My car came with a descreened maf and the car runs fine. On my 97 GTP I had removed the screen and the car ran like shit. Even though guys with that year car had no problems.

I think it differs from car to car.

damn, all this over a screen

damn, all this over a screen

Seriously and to complicate things even more, a guy I know with a Vette was spraying a 150 dry shot through a descreened maf and the car would throw a check engine light 1 out of 3 passes and run in limp mode. Then after a few mins the car would be fine. He put the screen back in and for whatever reason the car ran perfect on a 150 pill.

When I started this thread, it was simply to find out if the screen would be worth anything to anyone who regretfully removed it at some point. I never know it would bring this same old debate up from the grave. If you see a real need to de-screen a MAF, you should probably be running speed density. Again, I had an extra stock MAF from an old LS1 and the buyer said he didn't want the screen, for whatever reason, and I hated to think it would just be thrown away if it were actually worth something to someone out there (one man's trash could be another man's treasure). In retrospect however, it wasn't worth the 2 minutes I spent trying to screw with it. END OF STORY!

No one will buy just the screen... I promise you that... and to take it out without breaking it... use a flat head screw driver and lay it against the side and tap it with a hammer and it will knock it out in 1 solid piece

I don't remember him asking for anyone's "know-all" opinion on whether de-screening was a good or bad idea. People that act like they know are the ones who truly know nothing regardless. Why don't you guys keep your opinions to yourself and answer his question, if you don't have an answer don't click the reply button, damn that's simple.

I'm not sure it's possible to remove it without damaging it, I have never been able to.

Thank you, the point of this thread has been overlooked until now. All that it does at this point is point out common knowlege BS. It is pretty entertaining though. :engarde:
