Default Good deal?

I am looking at buying a trans am with the M6, so I was wondering if you guys think this is a good deal.

I test drove a red 1998 trans am with the M6 and t-tops. The car has 102,000 miles, but it needs a new transmission or a rebuild, because it grinds in gears 2,3,4, and especially 5 and 6. Also, I could barely get it into 5th gear because it kept popping out. It has 2 dents in the right quarter panel, but there is no paint missing and it doesnt really look that bad. He wanted 7,800 but then we drve it and found out about the transmission. I was thinking if 4,500 to 5,000 would be a good deal since the transmission will be around 2,000. Also, i will be installing the tranny myself. Thanks for any opinions.

Default Pass on this one

Keep looking. I can assure you there is a lot more wrong with that car than the transmission and a few dents. Nothing worse than a 'money pit' purchase. Too many nice ones out there to choose from still.

If your looking to pick up a cheap fixer upper and u know what your getting into then I would do it. I bought my t/a knowing or knowing as much as i could about it being solid and ive had no problems in 20k miles. However, this car could have somethings hidden in its closet so be ready to tackle them. For a 98 with a solid motor 4500 isnt a bad deal imo. On here guys replace good trannys so whats the difference replacing a bad one. But the tranny leads me to think if thats bad at 102 the motor might not be so solid. If you want an ls1 project this sounds great but there are t/a's out there you can buy problem free....

I'd go no higher than your low offer of $4500. 10 year old car, 100K+ miles and a bad tranny ain't worth $7800. Start low then look at Six Speed Inc. for a new bulletproof trans IMO.
