I want to put some drag brakes on the rear of my Camaro before racing it, I just don't trust these ground down calipers I have. I've done a search and read all about the strange and aerospace brakes. I have Aerospace fronts now. I know I will have to change the caliper bracket, which usually requires removal of the axle and bearings. I read the Strange bracket can be installed without removing the bearings. I don't mind just cutting the stock bracket off to avoid pressing the bearing off and on. So if I cut off the stock bracket, do I still have to remove the axle to swap brakes? Would I have to change anything else to do the swap?

I have a Strange 12 bolt rear BTW, nothing special as far as I know.

Also, where can I get the Strange setup?

I am in the process of putting Strange dual caliper brakes on. You do have to remove the axle and yes, I cut my stock backing plates off. Also, with the setup I am using, I had to get bearing spacers that move the axle out about an 1/8th of an inch. I got mine from Madman. They go in the axle tube behind the bearing. This is on a 9 inch...

I just cut the stock brackets off mine when I did the strange rears so I didnt have to press the bearings off. You have to use a spacer between the axle bearing and housing when you use the strange brakes so the axles need to come out so you can put the spacers in. Lot easier to cut the stock brackets off with the axles out as well.

I know this seems newbie-ish, I've just never dealt with a C-clip elim. type setup like mine.

So I just undo 4 bolts at the axle, slide the axle out (after removing the caliper and rotor), cut off stock bracket, slide spacer on and slide axle in with new bracket and put on the new caliper/rotor? Will I need to replace any seals?

I was told I could just do one side at a time and lift the car so that the fluid goes to the side I'm not working on.

Who sells the Strange setup?

ya, should be just like that.
I know the the stange s60s you done lose any fuild with the fornt on the tires, and the rear on stands. The axle seals hold the fuild in fine.

Well, since I won't really be under the car I can just lift one side at a time. I'm not cheap, I just REALLY hate diff fluid. Its the only automotive fluid that bothers me and I JUST changed it like 50 miles ago.

Don't know about the 12 bolt but, I have my 9 inch up on stands and both axles are out. No fluid leaking...

Put the spacers in the housing and then put the axle in.

I think Burkhart might sell em. A sponsor...

madman has the spacers too.

Just take the four bolts out, most likely it wont just slide out. Turn the brake rotor around, slide it on the studs, put three lug nuts on and use the rotor like a slide hammer to yank it out if they are stuck. Even level very little fluid will come out, but on an angle nothing will come out except whats clinging to the axle.

PM me a price on the dual strange rear brake set up when you get a chance Brian.

When you install the spacer and move the axle out 1/8" does that in any way negatively affect the engagement of the axle splines into the center section? I would assume there is enough spline engagement that the 1/8" does not matter.

No, it doesn't affect it. I'm actually going to have my rear narrowed and Strange said they could take 1.25" off each side w/o changing axles, since they could cut that much off the splined end and still be OK.

Do you need the above mentioned spacer if you already have a spacer on the axle? With the LT1 rear brakes Moser gives you a spacer to install before you press your bearings on.

If the spacer is between te housing and baring you are good to go. This spacer pushes the Axle and Bearing out.

So this would push the tire out further from the LCA?

Yep about .1".It pushes te bearing into the caliper bracket. Not even enough to worry about.

I am starting to do the swap from stock rear brackes to Mark Williams racing brakes this weekend. Well, I will finish it up on Monday when Madman gets me my spacers. I will do a write up & pics on the project.

Yeah my spacer from moser measured .122".

Do you have any pics of how the brake lines work out with the dual calipers? Do you have a kit for the lines or is it easier just to build your own lines?

Thanks.

I just finished pulling all my stock brakes off the car today. I am changing from stock rear brakes to Mark Williams racing brakes. My stock brakes are 24.4 lbs. My new Mark Williams brakes are 12.6 lbs.

Now, I need to cut off the rear backing plates from the axles. I should have my new brakes lines & spacers from Madman on Tuesday or Wednesday and she will go back together.
