Alright i want to know how good these heads really are.Im looking at a set for sale that have 2.02 1.60 valves that have been pocket ported behind the valves and ported on the intake side....and any idea what the compression would be on a set of flat tops in a 355ci small block?......i plan on running a comp 280 magnum cam with these and eldelbrock preformer rpm intake...would they make about 400 horsepower with this combo?

Just to give you an idea what you would run... I'll give you my old set up and times

1966 C-10 SWB 355 stock bottom end w/ flat tops: 202 Camel humps : 280/480 cam w/ a th350 w/ stock converter and shift kit 3.73's

Ran 13.5 @ 107 in a 4000lb truck I'd say its going to be right at the 375-400 mark... not to bad

well thats about what im looking for im planning on running that cam or a similar one....im looking at one of comps extreme energy cams also....im hoping with some 3.42s and a 3000 stall to get into low 8s in the 1/8th mile.

If starting from scratch, unless they are really really cheap, why use 40 year old piece, when you can get something new. Stronger, better material, better power, more reliable. My 2 cents, good luck.

My thoughts exactly. I have a cylinder head book that goes over specs on production GM heads along with aftermarket heads, and if you were to go with a production cast iorn head, I'd go with a vortech if you could. They flow more CFM and offer better low to mid range torque.

well the heads are on an engine im looking at for sale.....800.00 with heads and a serptine belt setup on it or 500 for jus a short block?????im having a tuff time deciding

unless you can get an excellent deal on the block with camel heads already on it....

also forgive my ignorance but do the camel humps have accessory bolt holes?? this is something else to think about

but like what was said before if you can get a good price for those camel hump than pick up a set of vortec's they can be had for fairly cheap and will make slightly more power than the camel humps

They are worth it if they are 250 machined and ready to bolt on, for 500 you can get the newer vortecs that are proven to make 400+ hp with not mods except the bigger springs and maybe clearanced for high lift.

So yeah i drove 60 miles and looked at this engine with the double humps on it last night....it was a total waste of time....dude failed to mention that the engine had been sitting under a tarp in his front for 3 months....so we started pulling plugs out of it and sure enough the front two cylinders where full of water and had water in the oil pan.it actually would have been a great engine to buy for the money but not after that.......damn what an idiot!

Well, vortecs are better, i just picked up a 4 bolt main for 100$, it had water in the cylenders but i am going .030 over and it was just scale, itll be alright for me.

Thats one thing I hate about SBC parts. You can talk to some hill jack that swears up and down that he's got a 450hp 350 with double hump heads and when you get there its basically the situation that you just described, and the chances are your buying a 250hp 305 are very high....Thats why its good to know casting #'s I guess.

That sucks. I never trust anyone. Yes I still look for deals, very rare at my level, but sometimes it is just worth going all new. You just can't count on used stuff. Good luck.

Yeah i guess you guys are right,its hard to beat new stuff....but i like to to find good deals on used stuff if its in the good shape...the guy called me last night and said he pulled the heads off and one of the cylinders had busted from the water freezing in it,so yeah it was totally ruined.
