Are you talking about the search member function or search post/topic function?
Post/topic you can change to search by date, member list search you can't and that probably won't change.

For example, when i want to check out responses to any threads that I have either created or written in then I would search my name (Vertigo) and the search results are by default set to relavence vs date.
