Stroker turbo motor questions
I am buying a used ARE built low compression motor, the block is a 5.3 bored to *around* 346 CI. If I wanted to go bigger can I do so with the 5.3 block ? Is the block the same as a 6.0 liter but just not bored out as much? If you are trying to build a 39x CI FI motor is it ok to go all bore or should the stroke be changed?
If everything else on the motor is already done is it as simple as doing new pistons/rings, cam, and the bore ?

Re: Stroker turbo motor questions
I bought his whole car. I will be taking out the motor, turbos, and 12-bolt and putting them into my '01 Z28. I will make some changes to his motor / turbos and mate it to a Th400.
His old car will get my '01 motor and will be put up for sale. So, a 98 Z28 with 37,000 miles on the car combined with a '01 STRONG motor with 39,000 miles. The car will be 95% stock other than that. For $10,500 ish.

Re: Stroker turbo motor questions
If you are going to tear the motor apart, Why not just pay $600 and get a brand new 6.0 block and build that? I dont know much about the 5.3, But it sounds like 39X is a high #. Im going with a 6.0 boed 30 with stock crank and it will be around 372ci. But it starts off a bigger motor. Good luck with it. What kind of turbo setup? Incon?

Re: Stroker turbo motor questions
why not just sell your car and build the other one.. it'd be a ton less work. ;D
aside from that, a 6.0 .030 over w/ low CR pistions and 6.125 rods would be a great blower motor. same setup the HPS WS6 runs, and w/ an F1 procharger, it's gone 9's. might look at they're setup. or just build a 414 and call it a day.

Congrats on your purchase, I'm sure it was a good price.
I don't think you can bore that block much more, you might want to ask ARE since they did it originally...
To do a 390-ish CI motor you would need more than just a lot of bore. In addition to needing a 6.0 block or an aluminum big bore you would need more stroke too. A 6.0 stock is like a 368ci right.
I'd just go thru the motor u have otherwise you will spend $600 on a new block, $500 for machining and balancing and won't be done until Xmas.

I have a block for sell that comes honed, new hardened Dura-Bond cam bearings, and new ARP main studs. Some people think the dry sleeves are better than the wet sleeves. I called Darton who makes the dry sleeves for Agostino racing and the wet sleeves. The tec said the wet sleeves are far better and can take more abuse, and that the dry sleeves are milled very thin to get a 4.125" bore. He said Darton has been using wet sleeves for years in motors that make over 1000 hp with out any problems. Also with the wet sleeves you get better heat transfer. Morgan Machine Shop are setting the motor up for me. Naturally aspirated cars with 427 CI are running the ¼ mile the low to mid 10's, with NOS there hitting the mid to hi 9's. I would be willing to go 3000 shipped. I would be willing to go 3000 shipped.

I thought ARE does a all bore 393 or something like that.

Re: Stroker turbo motor questions
sounds like a plan then ;D
im sure that ARE would build you an 3XX or a 4XX or anything you wanted if you a$k nicely. but seriously, what do you want to do with the car? build a realistic goal and go for it. it's kind of hard to conceptualize a "good" motor setup for your ride, if there's no set direction to go.
if it were me, depending on whats in that iron motor, i'd get a set of nice head gaskets, race gas, fuel sorted out, and put the best of what you've got into the car you're going to keep, turn up the boost, and go looking for supras. but thats just me.

Re: Stroker turbo motor questions
The overall goal is a streetable drag car, not something that I would take on a 500 mile trip but if I want to go cruise for a night it would be fine.
The only drawback I want to be is the gears. Not cooling issues or technical stuff, just high RPMs on the freeway and gas milage.
With a TH400 I'd like 10.5's or faster consistantly on ET streets. The car will have FULL suspension including K-member, A-arms....etc. It will have basic weight reduction (damn iron block) and the bumper internals will be removed...etc. The motor in a 6-speed car will be capable of 600RWHP on a mustang dyno, has previously put down 580 but was on a rich tune. I just had the heads gone over and am waiting on flow numbers, they are ARE stage 2.5 ish. I do not have cam specs yet but will post them when I get them. The heads were lifting slightly on the 580 run but I will be studding them so I feel with a good tune 600RWHP in a 6-speed is do-able.
