Default What does the shift detent do?

Does anyone know what the shift detent assembly does? I pulled my transmission to rebuild it and it was missing? Just wondered its function and have no clue why it wasnt there.

Not too sure but... I would imagine it provides positve feel and direction for the shifter. Kind of like a gate.

Found this,

It provides a load that must be overcome to shift fore/ aft into gear. This
"pre loading" smooths out all the synchronizing bump events . Its not really a gate control but a shift feel control. If your trans was missing one what was in the hole? I would replace it on the build-up.

well its right up top by the vent tube and the shifter so it didnt really leak. But i wonder who has been in this transmission before. They must have broke it or never put it back in.

It keeps the shifter effectively in the horizontal neutral line of shift pattern. If it's missing, you could tend to drag the tooth of the shift guide block against the gate walls of the shift guide plate. I have seen this happen once on a '95 F-body box.
