Default Should I get a mail order tune for 383 re-build to break it in?

Car is tuned for the mods in my sig. Rebuilding the bottom end to a 383 with 11.5:1CR and adding TSP stg 2.5 5.3 heads and bigger cam. Also adding 42lb/hr injectors but I know I will need a tune for those. Question is would that tune be safe to drive around town for a hundered miles or so (normal driving) to break it in before I have it dyno tuned and install the bigger injectors, or should I get a mail order?

I had Thunder do a mail order tune for me when I did my heads and cam and 42lb injectors. Took 'em less than 24 hours. Worked out really well. I did end up going for a full dyno tune after I ran the car a while...

Are you serious? WTF

how exactly does the mail order thing work? Send out my computer and they program it for a tune that should allow it to safely run or what? How much does this usually go for? The car will be getting a full tune on the dyno, but I'm not big on either the idea of driving around on a tune for a 346 with 10.25:1 and a cam......OR putting my new motor on the dyno with no iles or breakin period on it. What is everyone else doing when yuo buid a motor??

you can either send your computer out and have them load a tune on it there, or if you have access to a tuning program like ls1edit or hptuners you can request to have them email you the tune and you can load it on yourself. search for mail order tunes and see what people have to say about who to go to.

the safe answer is to get some kind of tune hashed out for your specific motor in a good mail-order tune.

the realistic answer is that you should get a good mail order now because next thing you know its been almost a year and you still havent gotten a dyno tune.

maybe talk to thunder racing? they were mentioned above, you could even try TSP.

Yeah, think I'll give them both a call tomorrow. It will be dyno tuned but I want to break it in first not just fire it up then trailor it to the dyno with 2 miles on a new motor......Figure a thousand miles or so then full dyno tune. Anyone have any idea on what something like this usually costs? What about that PCM 4 Less place I ised to hear about all the time on here? Tried a search but keep getting redirected to an error pg.....

Wait4me is a good tune and is cheaper than a Westers or Nelson tune who are two of the best M.O. tuners out there.

you're moving up to a 383, larger cam, AND different injectors (big diff here), so yes, go with a mail tune to hold you over.

+1 on Wait4meperformace.. send them the ECM and they will put a basic tune on for what you have as mod and changes for 383 and the larger injectors.. This should get you up and running decent.

Just send Jesse the ECM and a list of what you have, he will get it back to you quick!

I used him to get my project started and he also removed any thing that I didn't need. Have had no problem running the past year with his baisc tune !

Well I looked onto these places and also MadZZ tuning and PCM for less, I dont really feel like spending another 250 on a mil order tune when the shop I go to will Dyno Tune it for 150. My question I guess would be this then. Since yhe car is tuned for cam only, if I left the stock injectors in would I damage the engine with just a start up when its back in the car and some mild driving around town?? I just never thought throwing a brand new engine on the dyno was a very good idea, or is it???

Before I even tore my engine down, I sent my PCM out to PCM for less. I'm into the build right now, and already have the PCM back, complete with tune, sitting in my shop. If I do my part, I'm sure the engine will start, and run fine. Even so, I've already made arrangements for dyno tuning......there's no substitute.

I also went with a wait4me mail order tune to break everything in on mine. Cost $75 + $8 return shipping and works good. It's www.wait4meperformance.com or 574-267-3630. Can't really beat it for $75 IMO...
