The space where the starter goes is the only place you can get them out. Those are going to be a pain, but your going to have to get them out in order to pull the trans. put a couple bolts back in the bell housing and go to the next size bigger allen and beat it in with a hammer and hope that works. I have found it is easier to get those bolts out if you jack the transmission back up to get a better angle on those bolts.

I just dropped my tranny over the weekend. Those bolts are a pain in the butt. I went to autozone and got a hex bit socket and put a pipe on the end of the ratchet to get more leverage. My buddy held on to the flywheel with a big screwedriver by the teeth so it wouldn't move but thats because im replacing the flywheel. If you are not i dont recommend the screwdriver part. Did u get the bolts waaaay on top? I had to take the intake off to get to them. But thats because we have fat hands.

1 of 2 things take a socket and beat it over the head of the boltand use a ratchet to get it off. If you can't get it that way you going to have to get an air chisel but don't try to knock the head off instead put it to one side of the bolt and try to spin it using the repeated hits of the air chisel. This has worked for me every time.

You absolutely can remove the transmission with the torque converter bolted to the engine. I've done it before on many vehicles, including an LS1, that had locked up engines. Just know that the front of the engine will have to be jacked up to tilt the powertrain, and that transmission fluid will go everywhere once the converter is pulled out of the transmission. You'll have to pull and twist the transmission to get it to clear the input shaft and the floorpan.
That said, removing the converter bolts with the transmission removed won't be much easier.

the converter is bolted to the motor but not to the tranny. if you tilt the tranny far enough down it could theoretically slide off leaving the converter still bolted to the motor. whats so hard to understand about that??????
