Racer's Lounge - Installing Long Tubes is harder on Mustang or LS1

I'm a Big GM guy and I love F-bodies and me and some guys were talking about putting long tube headers on cars. Well I told them that I think putting long tube headers on a modular mustang is harder than putting them on a LS1. We they disagreed. I know that putting long tubes on a modular is a PITA, cause we did it on my buddies car when he did a engine swap. So I was wondering what you guys think and I know the LT1's are were worse than the LS1's, but we were only talking about LS1's.

Headers on LS1 = easier than pickin' up fat chicks at a bar.

Headers on a modular Mustang = PITA.

Me and a friend spent 3 days of working 20hrs a day on putting the LT's on his mustang. After those 3 grueling days we looked at the box it came in and noticed it said "for cars equipped with automatic transmission only". His was a 5sp. He sent them back to BBK and got his money back and i havent worked on a Ford since.

Mod motor by far, long tubes on a friends 03 GT was a fricking pain in the ass

I remember when I cross threaded a header bolt hole on my head on my car when swapping the headers, and I looked up information on tapping the heads.

I went onto a Mustang forum and somebody was asking the same question I was, and they asked, "How hard is it to tap the heads." First reply was "Not hard at all once you tear the entire motor down."

That was pretty memorable.

It took my friend an entire weekend to do on his LOL. Its either a 99 or 00.

Why are installing headers on a mustang so difficult anyway?

METALBEAST
04-16-2008, 11:42 AM
I've installed them on one mod, several LT1s and at least a 9 LS1s. F-body LS1s are the easiest headers in the world to install. LT1s are not bad. Mods are a fucking night mare :banghead:

Because of the size of the mod motor. It's as big as a big block chevy

the mod motors are by far more difficult.

I wonder if the people who picked LS1 has seen the engine bay of a Mod mustang.

whatever

They certainly never tried it. The worst part is you don't gain much. My buddies '98 Cobra gained either 9 or 12 at the wheels.

every ls1 ive done slip in like butter, i dont unhook anything like some say to. my instructions said to remove the starter, the oil filter the block off plate above the filter and the steering shaft....... i unhooked the battery so i didnt arc the post on the starter and they slid right in. the driver side rear corner of the flange barely hit the firewall and a little push and it was in. nothing to it. ive done hooker/flowtechs and pasesetters and they have all fell right in

LT1s aren't bad so long as you have done a set before, routing the plugs is the biggest pita. Every thing else, if you have done it before you know what all needs to come out to make it easier.

Some one over at mach1registry claimed to do it in 2-3 hours I don't know how the hell he did that but who knows. Personally it is so fucking tight down there I'd pull the engine all the way out and do it. Can't say much for F-bodies only set I installed were on my buddies 98Z and we were replacing the engine so of it took 5 mins. I think just about anything would be easier than a 32v, the new 05+ GT's seem like they would be easy though.

Are the cobra's just hard to install LT's on or the Sohc's bad as well?

Cobra's from 96 to 04 are worse, from what I'm told, cause they are DOHC. We were talking about the SHOC mainly which are a PITA.

Set a wager with your buddies that think LS1s are harder to install headers ont han a Mustang.

Whoever gets them on first wins say $100 bucks or whatever you decide. I bet you can install a full exhaust system on a LS1 F-Body in the same time it takes to do headers on a Mustang

Sounds like a good idea. I might try it. Hey is that the new joker as your avatar?

I have a friend who decided it to be easier to pull the engine and install the long tubes and put it back in all together on his 96 GT.

Mod Mustangs are VERY difficult to install LT headers on, foxbodies are simple.

I wouldnt go that far. It takes like 20 minutes on a first gen. And i would assume mods are more difficult, i read somewhere that LTs wont even fit with an auto.

you must not have a big block AC car..... those are a pain. i think he was probably talking late modle V8's. they are pretty easy compared to most other late cars. easiest ever would have to be like a four banger wrong wheel drive car. now thats easy

All you have to do is call some mechanics and they'll tell you it cost about twice as much to put them on a mod. car. Also,I've checked some dyno figures and unless you super charge or do an engine build they only give you about 5-10 hp at 6200 rpms.

LS1s are cake once you know what you're doing, can't speak for the mustang
