help me pick out a cam?
ok i am going hydro roller on a 388 stroker with ported vic jr, dart pro 1 plat heads with some mild work, all 4340 forged internals, and a T400 and plan on running a better stall but as of right now i have a TCI 2,200 which will get me by for a minute until i save another $700 for the TC i want...... anyways i was running the voodoo flat tappet cam and lifters and had a failure occure and ruined cam and lifters....... so i am going to do it right this time plus pick out a better cam if i can...... i plan on spraying this engine every now and then but would rather have a cam that was nasty on motor and performed decent on nitrous..... so no need to a "nitrous cam" so if you guys have seen any good grind or custom cams for carb small block GM cars let me know...... i want to have the best hydra cam i can possibly pick out and i know its possible! some cam are better than others and if you dont pick out the right one you are just loosing power that you could of had...... i have a few ideas but have ot finalized on anything and any info or opinions will be greatly appriciated! jake

Comp XFI280HR-113 is my choice. It made 380 RWHP and 450 RWTQ on a friend's 400ci TPI engine. Chevy High Performance mag recently did an article on a 383 engine with this cam, and with nitrous, does anyone remember? I dont have the issue in front of me.

To make real power it needs a big solid roller, however he asked about hyd roller and thats the cam I suggest.
BTW the camshaft in my "Street" is .714"/.714" 262*/272*@ .050" 114* so if you were running a super rowdy bumpstick and stepped down sure I could see a power loss. Otherwise it was installer error, that exact camshaft has made 547hp/577lbft at the crankshaft for me in a 10.5:1 383 w/AFR's.

i'm not going to argue with you about this.Yes that cam will make over 450hp in a 383 in fact i made around 580hp with that camshaft in a 10-1 383.But the one i suggested made 605hp.The camshaft was installed properly,i degreed it in as i do every camshaft. You need to understand that bigger is not always better. Its the combonation of parts that make a good engine. With the parts Jake has i suggested the camshaft i did becuase its very similar to my 605hp 383.I'm not trying to be a dick either, but i build and dyno engines all day every day-and do it well.I do have a clue as to what i am talking about.

well as long as what shawn said ran as a street car i would say its would do about the same in my car...... we had the same stroker engine, similar aftermarket heads, very similar intake....... if all i was wanting was tons of power it would be had, but i want good power without having to mess with the engine every few weeks...... but either way lets stay focused as to we are trying to help me find a good street cam not see who knows more on here cause clearly both you guys both know your stuff..... so anyways i am looking into this stuff and will be ready to order in a week or 2 at the most.....shawn when you get a chance can you PM me the price of the comp lifters and cam combo? jake

You'll be very pleased with either one was more the point I was trying to convey, I wasnt the one who spouted off that his cam choice was no good for power LOL as I believe it would run well also. I bow down to his infinite wisdom, he's knows all
