I used a 95-99 Dodge Neon spring isolator. It even has some goo inside it to help it bond to the spring.

at the very worst, what will happen if the hose wears away to nothing? Ride quality will suck? Dont want drastic problems

If it wears away to nothing, you might hear some clunking - then just put a new piece of hose on it. I the mod a couple of years ago, and my car is a daily driver. No problems.
