what's the most economical upgrade for the shitty 1998 type?

gm part nmb: 17801830 "high volume ls pump" -$73
OR
gm part nmb: 12586665 "ls6 oil pump" -$102

is there that big of a difference between the 2?

Well, IMHO, spend the $145 and get a Melling Oil Pump. I''m a big believer in doing things once. I just did a cam and spring swap. I had no issues with my old 98 pump, but since the cover was off, 70,000 miles was time to do the pump and chain.

At idle at temp. I get 40 psi and under load I am over 60 psi.

An extra $50 is worth peace of mind

i have the ls6 and im getting great oil pressure with the vindicator cam...one of the biggest cams. if u only have 100 bucks it works great. but if u have more money to spend the best one u can get is usually the best way to go. that melling one sounds nice
