Default Crank bolt bottomed out

I just got a call from a guy who was doing his work himself, putting a oil pump in a 6.0l truck. He said he got a longer bolt to install the balancer and he was putting it on and he bottomed out the bolt in the end of the crankshaft, I dont have time to look at it today, but he said the threads look ok, just far down in the crank looks a little messed up. Has anybody done this before?? what are the worst case scenarios, i think he wants to put the pulley on and drive it like that.

Is the bolts now out? Most guys break the bolt when they do this.

Yes the bolt is out no problem there, he just said it looked like the back end of the crank , not the threads looked farted up. I dont know if that would hurt anything or not. I am going to try and go look at it sometime this weekend

The longer bolt will bottom out if you keep turning it. I usually just get it on there far enough until i can get the old bolt in there and seat the pulley all the way. Then you take that one out and put in the new one.

When is was getting hard to turn and then he realized it was bottoming out, im sure he stopped and then took the bolt out. i would get a new bolt, the stock length, and the run a tap through the crank just to make sure the threads are ok.
