Default Pulley

Today, I had a new power steering pump installed at Meineke, and as they were removing the pulley, a plastic hook piece popped off. They were wrestling with the pulley pretty hard as this happened. But they said it would still run fine.

Is it obvious that they went about the wrong way in taking off the pulley, or do you actually have to pull that hard each time you remove it?

I think the guy used his bare hands. He pulled on it so hard that the car was rocking sideways a bit. But at the end, I was assured that the pulley would be just fine...

I'm worried about the plastic piece that broke off. What kind of plastic hooks are there on the pulley, and how important are they?

Thanks a lot.
