Default Plain ls6 heads a waste after a cam? Or wait till aftermarket

Basicly i have a 224 cam'd 99 coupe with full bolt ons.

Should i just put some stock zo6 heads on and call it quits or save up anuther roughly 750 dollars and buy the ported 5.3s from texas speed?

The heads will be my last perf mod and i really want to get it done asap, but i dont wanna kick my *** for waiting how many HP would i get with stock ls6 heads and how many would i get with the ported 5.3s

cam is 224 on a 112 lsa 581 lift with xer lobes

That is the cam I run, on LS6 ( 243) heads. Heads are polished but not ported.

I am still not convinced the 5.3 heads are better then PP 243 heads except on cost.

Doing the heads are not the easiest job in the world, do it once and be done with it. Get the heads you want, not the ones you want right now.

I was told plain ls6 heads will net me 20rwhp

Ported heads are going to give me how much more? I cant see them doing more then 30 or so or am i way off? PS this will not be AFR or any other 2k head.

If done right, both p&p 243's and p&p 5.3's will perform well. If you are going to go throught the work of a head swap, new gaskets and bolts, etc., I would have ported heads put on, wait until you have the extra cash.

My buddy would do the work in roughly a saturday. Car would be back together on sunday and at the tuner on monday. So its not a big deal mod.

I just am trying to figure if the stock ls6's i can get for roughly 500 bucks and worth 20hp or spend 1200 and get 34 hp

I would have preferred ported 243's but since I have all of $150 invested in my stock 243's it was the best choice for me. Now had I needed to spend more than $500 (including other parts/tools/materials) I'd of definitely picked up ported heads. But then again, I have an LS1 foxbody mustang sooo the head swap is way easier for me (one bolt hits the brake booster, so you have to move it but otherwise it's a piece 'o cake).

I would save the 500 to be used towards p&p heads.

Do heads once, and get the ones you want. Especially if you're paying for labor, besides, do you want to do a head swap twice?
