Default draining the block

i want to replace the fan thermostat with an aftermarket one, but as i remember, just draining the radiator, the head/block will still have water in it because of the closed thermostat-if i pull the fan thermo., water will pour all over everything-its not running right now, or i guess i could warm it up, then drain the radiator so the water was below the head-sure been a pita with the thermo. housing on the return side, lol
what do you guys do to drain these things when needed, not a big deal, but everything is painted, trying to keep it clean

Default

There are 2 block drains, towards the rear of the block on the sides. To get to the one on the pass side you have to pull the starter.
