Reverse problem...

Reverse problem... When I pop it in reverse when I first start it... no reverse lights come on... I dont even feel that slight resistance when I put it in there... then I put it in neutral foot off the clutch... push it back in and slide it in reverse and I feel that slight resistance and boom reverse lights come on... whats the problem?
