Question Noob needs help learning about internals...

Alright so now I've got my camaro, but I need to learn more about engines.

I know a lot of the components names and have an idea of how they work... but when you start talking about TDC and PTV clearance (and all of those other terms).... I uhhh get lost. Sure, TDC means Top Dead Center... but I still don't understand what the hell it's referring to. These are just examples, I want to know MORE than them.

I mainly want to learn about GM motors, specifically LSX... but I know a lot of the stuff is 'generic' or similar across the board. I LOVE engines and how they work, but I didn't grow up with my dad being a mechanic... and I'm going to a 4 year university so UTI and Wyotech aren't an option. I want to learn about them mainly for my hobby, and secondly because it'll save me a lot of money.

I know this stuff SEEMS hard, but I'm no idiot... and no offense to ANY of you, but I've seen some dummies talk about and work with the internals of the engines... so I'm pretty confident I can tackle this.

So I'm asking you all for some guidance.
What books do I need to get? Other resources?

Please give me some starting points!

Oh yea, another reason I want to learn... I'm tired of people talking out their *** like they know what they are talking about. I'm not really talking about people here on LS1tech... but the people local to me.

Doesn't it get old? I know it does to me.

Edit: Opps, I swear I posted this in the internals forum! If an Admin or Moderator wants to move it, please do

I would highly recommend reading "How to Build High Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8's". It was one of the best books I have read, you can find it at AZ.
