I think studding the LS1/6 mains would be overkill unless it's a very high compression engine spinning high RPM's (8000+). Though it might be good insurance on a blown or turbocharged setup running big boost #'s. I don't know of anyone spinning main bearings in the LS1/6 engines, just rods.

Whats the point? When is the last time you heard of a main bolt letting go? When is the last time you heard of a main itself letting go? Rods let go, rod bolts let go, pistons crack/disentigrate. Those should be the main concerns IMHO

Put your money elsewhere...

i just dropped $6K plus on my stock cubed motor. whats another $135 towards a little insurance? plus deduct what OEM suff is gonna cost you from that $135. makes even more sence after that.

My concern was, with the crank ofset ground to 3.72, and the big nitrous hit, 300+, it certainly couldn't hurt.

Without big boost, or nitrous, I'd say that it's not needed. But better to do it while you have the motor out, as opposed to down the road when you decide you want to throw more at it.

Exactly. when you figure in the cost of main studs against the whole price for the motor, it's a small price to pay for the extra security, ecspecialy if F/I or N2O, ecspecially if you figure the cost against buying a new set of GM bolts, you'd almost be crazy not to do it, even if just H/C, if you remotely think you might ever wanna spray or boost, just do it.

My question would be instead, are billet main caps really worth it? Matt Harlan had them on his car, and went back to stock, now whether it was because of the mains themselves, or improper maching, they caused him problems, and if he can make 700 at the wheels with studded stock mains, then we all should be able to make less power safely for now. I would rather use the money from the billet mains and buy a rev-kit from ARE instead, i have heard of more valve float issues than spun mains.

I spun 3 mains when i first put the motor together. More related to the billet caps, line hone, and bearing crush than clamp force. I went back to stock because the bearing failure took out 3 caps, the block and crank. DOH!

Studding buys you insurance. If you plan to have the bottom end apart or the heads off a few times put in studs. You will save your block. The aluminum threads have a finite life cycle when it comes to R&R with complete torque.

I have ARP main studs, as well as the ARP head studs. Can't be too safe. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
