Default Building a new motor any suggestions

I recently blew my motor, it was losing oil psi and was going anyway but I continued to spray a 150shot for about 2years and used it as a learning period. The motor was just a stock 8.5/1CR stock mid 80's 350 with a 650 holley, edelbrock rpm performer intake, headman headers, dual exhaust and full msd. And ran mid to high 12's with a 150shot.

So this is the setup I am planning to go with all suggestions and opinions are welcome

4bolt main chevy 350 truck block with stock crank and rods, arp rod and head bolts, forge flat top pistons, brodix IK 200 heads, comp cam 1.52 roller tip rockers and either a Xtreme Energy 274 or 280 magumn cam, edelbrock rpm performer air gap or weiand stealth intake. I am hoping this setup is good for about 400-420hp and about 550 on the nitrous with about a final CR of 9.5 to 9.8 to 1

I would stay away from nitrous cams unless you are spraying a 300 shot or more and spraying all the time.

I would also go with aftermarket forged rods and crank and never worry about it.
Nitrous likes compression. If you want to run pump gas still on the motor then I would go to at least 11.1.

11-1 forged pistons, aluminum heads, single plane is better for distribution on the nitrous so at least get a victor jr., run a bigger cam, get a carb with annular boosters, they work really good with nitrous.

Also get forged crank and rods with at least the arp 2000 bolts. Get an ignition with a timing retard as well since you plan to spray it. secondary fuel system is always nice so you can run pump gas on the motor and run race gas in a 1 gallon cell thats has it's own pump and regulator for the nitrous.

Also what car is this going into? What trans mission and read and do you have and what suspension stuff, it all has to work together to get the fastest combo.

I am only going to spray a 150shot and sometimes 200 but at the track only, no nitrous for the street. 11.1CR is out of the question I want to keep it 10.25or below. I can start looking into the crank and rods but was told and read that stock gm forged crank and rods are good for the power levels I am looking for

I had a brain fart and could not remember which style intake was good for nitrous, thanks for the reminder

I planned to do this later down the line less I find a great deal on the parts

it's going in a 91 s10 short bed, I have a Mickey DR, turbo350 tranny, 3.73 gears, eaton posi, qa1 drag coilovers up front and slide a links with CE adjustable drag shocks in the rear. I still need to make up my mind on a TC and stall speed but I most likely will not pick one out till I get the spec's on the motor

If you end up doing a crank & rods anyway, there's no reason not to stroke it to a 383.

the engine builder is trying to talk me into a 383 but we'll see I really wanted to stay with a 350 but if I do go with another crank and rods I'll just do the 383

oh and had time to look at same different cam spec's and I am thinking about go with this Xtreme Energy 274 or 280 magumn cam

If you go 383, get a kit with at least a 5.7" or 6" rod. 383 is way better than a 350 anyways, it makes great power in a streetable range. Nothing like making 500ft torque at 3500 rpm.

ok so I called comp cam today and they said either cam will work for my setup but that he would lean toward the xtreme 274 cam but it cause more vac problems than the magumn 280

he also suggested staying below 10.5 to 1 cr if I want to run pump gas without have to worry about detonation

Go with the extreme cam, it's a better lobe design than the older magnum stuff.
If you run pump gas and you're running an aluminum head 10.5 compression is actually really good with that cam. Should make some great torque numbers.
