Default Are Camaro SS After market Hoods crap?

I messed my hood up and I am looking for a new one. What route should I go and about what prices am I looking at in terms of OEM vs After market? This is for a 2000 SS Camaro.

OEMs sell for about $700 used and $2000 new. Aftermarket ones have a lot of fitment issues. Good luck.

you can get an oem hood from gm or im sure someone on here sells them. the oem hoos have the duct work for the ram air and most aftermarket ones do not.

+1 on fitment issues. They can be a major PITA trying to get them lined up and then just looking right period. If you can find OEM that would be the best bet.

aftermarket ones never line up right with the fender, just look on ebay or the parts classifieds on here, i personally found a oem 2001 one for 250 bucks but that was just luck in craigslist (spectre sold it to me from one of their project vehicles)

I bought one on ebay for $395 shipped to my door. After about 3 hours of messing around with the hinges, the hood doesn't look that bad, but still has some fitment issues. It's fiberglass and is functional. I'll try to get close up pictures of the fitment issues later. Here are three pictures to get an idea on how it fits, the fitment issue is on the passenger side. The hood simply doesn't have enough curve to fit right on that side, it's too high in the front and back and it's going to cost a lot to get it to fit right since it's fiberglass.

Certifit sells them for $200. That's what I put on my car. The only problem with fitment on mine is at the very front, right above the headlights. It sits up a little bit. I can probably grind a little fiberglass off the bottom side to make it sit down some. I had to prime/block it 3 times to make it straight, but you have to expect that from cheap fiberglass

Yep,... VFN Hoods Kick Serious ***!!!
No Fitting issues/horrors. I've been having mine for 4+ Years and haven't had any issues.
TRUE,... it does depend on your finishing skills as do Most Aftermarket Hoods.
Mine is the Bolt-On Style do to the Extra Internal Supports vs the Pin-On "Light Weight".
Take a Look...

Is that the VFN 3" raised SS hood?
I have that same hood in carbon fiber on my Pewter Z/28 if so. I didn't pay them the crazy retail price they get for that CF hood though. . . found it in the used parts section here on LS1Tech.com a couple of years ago. Got it shipped to my door for $700.00 instead of paying the $1500.00 they get for them retail. Came in gel coat, fitment was spot on PERFECT. For what they charge for that CF stuff it had better fit well.
Nice looking hood on your car, is it in fiberglass? I will try to find a pic of mine.

Yeah, it's the 3" SS Bolt-On Fiberglass hood from VFN
Hope your Carbon Fiber Hood fits well. Does it have waves in it?
A friend of mine has a C.F.-Stock style SS hood on his 2001 Camaro.
After he finally got it to fit it became real wavey. Don't know why.
Is yours a Bolt-On or a Pin-On?

I'd like to see the pics of your Z with that hood.
What does it weigh?
Thanks for the Props

Yes mine is the bolt on style, and only weighs 9 lbs.
Fit like a glove, never had to mess around with it, it just bolted on and fit better than the stock one. As for waves, mine developed them after the paint cured really well, but only in one area. That area from the scoop tapering to the front of the hood. Had to take it back to the paint shop to get some fish eyes out of it after about a month, then it looked perfect. But for some reason after a few more months those "waves" or "ridges" showed up horizonally across between the outside edges of the scoop in the middle.
Have not taken the time to have anything done about it thus far, because the painter that did the job is no longer around, and my car is basically a race car anyway, not a show piece. I was after the weight off the front end.

I have been looking for some pics on my computer, but can't find where I put them. Would've gone out to the garage and taken a couple more but my camera is out on loan to a friend right now. Will find some or take some new ones as soon as I get the camera back. Wonder what makes that CF shrink up like that and create those waves or ridges? The rest of the hood stayed perfect.
