Default FI Guys, Whats Your Trans Of Choice?

Toying with ideas for my GTO and had some questions. I've noticed a lot of people go from M6 H/C/I setups to trans swaps over to the A3 or A4 side with a turbo setup. I see a lot of M6 supercharged setups more than I do auto s/c setups. So just curious what your favorite trans of choice is on your FI setup, what FI setup you have, and what is your primary use for the car (fun street car, drag race car, road race car, etc).

With the s/c, the boost is rpm dependent not load dependent, so a manual is equally suited to the task as well as an automatic.

With a turbo, you need load in addition to rpms, to generate exhaust gas to get spooled up, and I like an automatic with at least a 3k stall for that. You know the story on my car -- built to do it all, street/drag/ax/rr.

Agreed with above, and if you like the idea of shifting, get a 4l80e built with a full manual valvebody with a transbrake as well. Then you get all the benefits and features of both plus more.

built T400 with a good qaulity torque converter..... i have an old school artcar that does the job! some guys can have a M6 built to handle big power but its really hard to be the reliability of a T400!

TH400, faster and more fun than my M6 could ever dream of being, hard to beat the reliability as well.

Mine is a fun street car (really fun). 2.75 gears = decent gas milage and good highway manners.

4l80e...fully electronic with rossler tbrake so it acts/ahifts like stock on the street. If only going to the track only, i'd say th350,th400, or glide...depending on weight/power

Agreed with all of the above, I love grabbing gears so I had a Viper Spec t56 built allong with a twin exoskel but before I even had a chance to install it I sold it and just finsihed getting a 4l80e built with a custom 3k stall. This is for a turbo btw.

yep but this is the forced induction area so i figured he would be racing and hot dawging and plus if you get the right converter and gear a A3 can be very streetable..... i mean how many guys are taking these FI hot rods on cross country vacations anyways? but you are so right when you say that but as long as you do an A3 right you can almost have the best of both worlds! the problem is guys try to run BIG stalls with old trannys that dont have lock up stuff so they run alot higher rpm speed at cruising levels than they have to

after wasting too much $$$$ on "built" 4l60e's, I finally decided to stop dicking around and go TH400 with 'brake, RMVB....also beefed up the rear with a ford 9 inch from moser.

Figure out how you plan to use the car first.

I will be running 70% track versus 30% street, so a TH400/tbrake is a no brainer.
The turbo builds don't need a crazy gear or converter, so it will still be street friendly.
Guys that drive more on the street will benefit from a 4L80E for better mileage.

I am having a great time with the 4l60E and 3500 stall on my SS Josh. You know I take it up in the mountains, on long road trips, cruise through town, and beat on it at the track. I can't shift a 6 speed worth a hoot so the A4 has been great for me. Just mat the loud peddle and hang on

Hughes 4L80E with the TCI controller. Love it. Got it set up to shift mellow until you hit 49% TPS. Adding a paddle Shrifter kit which I'm hoping really helps for street and road race driving.
