MY 2001 TA has the t-56 6 speed and i ordered a set of 4.10 gears and the intall kit last night, however my dad thinks that puting in 4.10 gears is going to kill the way my car drives. Is this correct? it seems like alot of people put in 4.10 gears that have a t-56. This car is a weekend hot rod not a daily driver and may one day see a track but not often. This step is also preliminary to my cam install i will be doing soon. Other mods are : lid and kn, pacesetter lt, tsp true duals no cats, predator tune, lca and subframe connector

Thanks for the help

Your going to be fine.....Don't sweat it....I have 4.11's in mine drive it 250 miles a week and take it the track on the weekends....I'm fixing to go with 4.30's.......You'll love the 4.10's on the street:devil:

^^^^^^ What he said.

I found the car to be more 'driveable' with the 4.10s, unless you plan on doing many hard street launches on hard street tires (but you'll do a pretty smoke show ;) ).

The only other time they are not recommended is for a lot of open track/road race/HPDE use.
Most say to stick with 3.42s or at most 3.73s in that case.

The first thing I did to both my 6 speed camaro's was put a 12 bolt with 4.10's in it. I really liked the way it ran with them.

My dads initial response was, " that will kill your top end", My thought on that was " where can i drive 170MPH anyway!!

4.10's are a great street gear in the M6 cars. I run about 2000rpms at 70mph down the freeway in 6th gear. I usually cruise 45mph around town in 5th gear, where I used to be in 4th. I still average 20mpg too. You will have to learn to shift more often to keep your rpms down if you want to get good mileage, but the increased acceleration on tap is so much better. By far the best bang-for-your-buck you can do to your M6 car. JUST MAKE SURE YOU SET THEM UP PERFECTLY! (ask me how I know :eyes:)

I know because I did mine myself and they whined and ruined the gearset. So I bought a new set, and the second time around I got them set up much better; they are nice and quiet this time. For me, it was luck more than anything that I finally got them lined up perfect. PAY A SHOP TO DO IT, trust me it's worth the money. And dont let any monkey do it; take it somewhere that specializes in axles and gears. Replace all bearings and seals too. They will run quiet if set up properly and broke in properly.

Good luck!

PS: You will LOVE the seat-of-pants feel :pimp:

Its funny you say that..I took them to a shop and they said they were pro's..Guess what, they f'd up the install and and tore the gears up..He didn't tell me that ,but I'm on my 3rd set now..Motive 3:73's A4..He outsourced it to a guy that just does rear ends..He over nighted a set, should be in tomorrow and done fri. He's had my car since last thurs..I thought this was like a 3 to 4 hour job not a 8 day job..

The fastest I got up to with my red 2000 camaro was 150 with the 4.10's and 6th had a lot more gear but it just wouldn't pull. Don't worry about top speed at all.

I see you run 2krpm at 70. Just as a comparison I have 3.73 and 70 leaves my rpms at around 1700~1800. Been a while since I looked so I don't know exactly what RPM.

4.10's are better for performance, but it will also chip or break teeth easier, it's a weaker gear in a stock 10 bolt. I honestly would talk to a sponsor about upgrading to an after market rear, once you launch hard, have a good amount of power, or just drive it hard period it's a matter of time before they break with a T-56 and clutch dumps :)

ya my 4.10s lasted about a year until the teeth started chipping, not to mention it was noisy as hell!! the 4.10s went out sunday and im haveing a guy put a set of richmond 3.73's on it, from wht i hear they are alot stronger and will last longer than the 4.10's

Lose driveability with the T56 and low gears?! Ha!!

Low gears are a BIG improvement in the overall feel and performance of the car. With the double-overdrive 6th gear, you still get the same highway mileage as an A4/2.73 car, and you have wicked acceleration and always a good gear to grab in between .

Ignore your Dad on this one ;).

funny thing a shop in DE that was supposed to be great at doing rears and everything else, either forgot or didnt care enough to tighten the pinion, so it was moving in and out if you touched it. tore up the gears. we drained like a handful of fluid and there was 2 metal chunks in it, cant imagine if i drained the whole thing out of it. i guess i should have.

I think 4.10s improved driveability. Fun factor increased ten fold, and I didn't see any mileage lost. I just got more familiar with 6th gear, lol.

I get 30 mpg on the highway now with my 3.42 gears. How much do you think I will loose with the 4.10 I hope only a few mpg. ???

I still get 24-26 with my LE2 LT1 and 4.10's.

Take your dad for a drive after you install the gears. He'll be eating his words.

BEST MOD EVER!!!

Youll still have well over 150 MPH top end, and you can always add a cam for higher rpm or bigger tires later if you need more top end. And as the other guys said, it will vastly improve the drivability down low. Expect to turn just under 2K rpm doing 70 in sixth gear. Theyre the perfect gear for teh double overdrive t56.

And for gas mileage, im getting 26-27 MPG on the highway with heads/cam, big tires, heavy flywheel, and 4.10s.

sorry to hi jack but
do you need to get a tune for 4.10 gears in a M6?

GuitsBoy
05-08-2008, 06:34 PM
ad no tune whn i had 4.10s unless they mess up ur speedo, it didnt mess up my speedo, but i knw of people needing a speedo calibration

It certainly should have messed up your speedo... Unless you change the tuning, your MPH will be way off.

4.10's are great. with a 6sp, you hardly notice the difference with driveability.

I get 30 with my 4.10's. That was before my LT's and UD pully so it's probly better yet. My dad also told me don't do gears but I'm a big fan of them, I know what gears do for performance and driveability. Stock gears suck, period. GM lovessss tall gears.
