I am looking at 98 Z28 M6. I know I am going to want to put 4.10s in it but I dont want to break the 10 bolt.I am going to drive the car on the highway alot and take it to the track 4 times a year with prolly 4 passes at the most.Am I going to be safe with 4.10 or should I get 3.73s for it?

The Answer to your question is MAYBE!!!!
People have taken the stock 10 bolt into the 10s i believe. Others, such as myself, have busted it w/ bolt-ons, no gears, regular street tires, on an unprepped surface (i.e. no track).
The best answer i can give you is that anything you do to the car that either adds power or helps you put that power to the ground will raise the probability of the 10 bolt breaking. The biggest problem i see with gears is that folks get them, break their 10-bolt, and then upgrade to a 12 bolt or 9". Not the most cost effective way to go about it IMO!

I'd start saving for a 12 bolt or 9". I should have done this a while ago, but I'm going into my second set of gears in my 10 this weekend. First I had 3.73s with the A4 and now going 4.10s with the M6, guess I'll have to see how long they last. But I'm going to be pretty easy on it until I get some cash saved up for a stronger rear.
It might hold and it might blow right away, I haven't broke one yet

my 4.10s didnt break my 10 bolt, the 4.10s broke ahah...im haveing them put in 3.73s in my stock rear because they are stronger in will last longer than 4.10s in stock rear

I didnt think there was alot of difference going from a 3.42 to a 3.73.

in my opinion if u are goin to keep ur stock rear thn i would go with 3.73's because they are much stronger....if your going to do 4.10's i would wait till u beef up ur rear end, cause its only a matter of time b4 4.10's will go out in a stock rear

There is a noticeable difference.....410's looked too puny...

If you slip your clutch on launches, they MAY last. If you dump the clutch, its more than likely going to grenade. Mines been going strong for 60K miles, but on 315 street tires. No DRs yet.

STock 3.42= cracked the carrier in half, Upgraded to auburn pro unit with 4.10s
Aburn/4.10s= SHATTERED the ring and pinion which locked up busting my transmition and clutch. Auburn held though lol..
Aburn/410s(round 2)= Ripped a tooth out of the pinion..fuck this...
Moser 9"/4.11s= 5500 RPM dump on 26in Hoosiers and drove it home with a wisper quiet drive...well quiet for a Fbody.
The first break was on M/Ts DRs but completly stock
The 2nd break was with bolt ons and the M/Ts :)
The 3rd break was bolt ons and some crappy ass kuhmos with nothing but roll racing
