Thunder Racing Cheater Cams
Anybody know if they are good??? I don't know much about them... want to get some feedback.
I am looking at a target of 400hp with H/C and supporting bolt ons.
I would like a stock sound... which the appeal of the Cheater Cam is... but is it worth it??
On the website they claim 396hp keeping stock exhaust, manifold and keeping cats!!!
Too good to be true???

Well its going to be hard to get hp wise exactly what the manufacturer put down, but anything is possible. Noticed your from Miami, check out the link in my sig for Speed Style and Peformance. You should head out to one of our meets, when you hear my car im sure you wont want to have a stock sound. Why do you want to keep the stock sound, sleeper im guessing?

^ i've been to the SSP meets twice... haven't ran into you tho. I will probably make it to the next one.
I guess if I drive it as a D/D for a few more months I don't want my car to sound like Death to all, it would be cool at first, but I work in Doral. Driving to and from work could get annoying... I do plan on some NAWS too. We'll see how crazy I get.

if i have to drive it as a D/D for a few more months... atleast until the end of summer, maybe I should wait.
I'd love to buy your N20 kit... no cash right now tho.

cheater cams are specced to work with the factory exhaust and a good intake system. sure just like any cam they work better with headers, but if you decide to go illegal on the exhaust there are much better cams out there than the cheater that will still keep you streetable.
fwiw, i wouldnt spray with the stock exhaust. doesnt flow enough and the cats could get too hot and possibly start to melt. if you're going to spray definitely get headers.

Well with heads its going to be a tad bit louder than what it sounds like now. But also remember that im running SLP Shotgun Resonators for mufflers, those are just really expensive slip on pipes. They have no holes or baffles inside, just a straight through pipe. When i first got my X-pipe set-up i had Magnaflow 4x9s that came with it. I don't have a video of them, but im sure you can yourself a better H/C set-up and run those mufflers and not be to obnoxious.

Here are the mufflers run through an exhaust similar to mine, running the TRex cam. Not to loud at idle, and i know personally they sounded great while cruising or WOT. Don't forget you can add some high-flow cats to muffle the sound a bit.

i just read the article, and the 394hp was with aftermarket heads and a fast intake system too. just the cam swap you might see in the ballpark of 360-370hp. for the money there are significantly more powerful packages out there but they wont work with the factory exhaust worth a damn. goodluck man.

Well on the page they show they put down 394rwhp, yet if you look at the graph with the FAST 78 you'll see they only put down 384rwhp. And they put down 411 with the FAST 78, 85mm MAF, Racetronix plug and play fuel set-up, and 37lb. injectors. Not a bad set-up, but you can do better than that.

Also keep in mind that the car they dynod started out with 330 RWHP, so overall your looking at an approximate 60 RWHP gain. I went with a 224 cam, but I also got heads to go with it!

I can understand if you wanted to be a complete sleeper, then yeah i guess you can consider something like this. But i would rather just be cam only and make just as good power.

Don't do it. You'll just be pissed. I picked up my car making 394/ 386 with chtr, pat stg 2 heads, headers and clogged cats. Probably closer to 400 without the cats. The car feels exactly stock to me. I know I have a little more power but, I so wish I'd done the 224 as my first cam. Now I'm stuck because upgrading to a 224 or 228 probably won't be worth the money. My latest thought has been a G5X3. I felt more of an increase in power when I did the lid from stock. Also, I noticed the maybe 10 hp gain when I switched out my stock muffler. I've yet to be impressed with my cam. Thunder racing is great and have techs that are always willing to help. The problem is, I didn't know what I wanted. Through stock manifolds, you'll barely know its there. I got a free dyno pull at a local mustang shop because the own bet me my car was stock.

A good friend of mine has an 05' GTO M6 car with the Cheater cam. It has: New Era CAI, Vengence ported TB, ported intake manifold, PRC stg 1.5 243's, Pacesetter LT's, Magnaflow CB, SLP pulley & 160* stat. The car layed down 411/396 on a conservative dyno. His best ET to date is 11.89 @ almost 116 MPH. The car gets 23-24 HWY, runs/drives great. He ran the car last weekend and was on par with lots of other GTO's with much bigger camshafts.
