Would it do harm to my engine? I do not know what is in it now, but I want to go with Royal Purple and a K&N oil filter next.
Would you recommend me doing so?

No it wont hurt your engine. This only applys to older engines that have caked oil deposits blocking leaks around seals. The synthetic will clean this up and cause leaks in older engines. I would use AC Delco filter as for type of oil we can all kinda agree synthetic is better but we all have our preferences. I prefer 10w-30 Mobile1 Synthetic.

So you'd recommend an AC Delco filter over any other type? I think I will put Royal Purple in mine... 10w-30.

Yes acdelco is the OEM filter.

NAPA GOLD oil filter is better in charts I have seen...and slightly cheaper.

what kind of charts ? like filtering compared to flow ? You have a link to these charts ?

I'm aware that its OE.... just figured that K&N may be a step up.

I've seen them... but I have also seen WIX Filters... I've wondered about those.

I decided to use them because they never have any manfactuaring recalls like other brands *cough fram*

Yeah.. I did read about that RECALL.

I did a little bit of reading and it seems like Mobile1 , K&N , AC-Delco STP Encore are all made by champion labs and these napa filters that NHRAMAN mentions are made by WIX just labeled under a diffrent name.

^ yup all are basically the same just different labels.
I use mobil 1 filter and royal purple. I love it.

I prefer 10w-30 Mobile1 Synthetic.
Question
What do you gain by using 10w-30 over 5w-30?

So I guess a K&N filter wouldn't be bad.

Bearing wear is greater with 5w. But its not going to matter until you reach 150k then you will notice the bearing wear depending the oil you use. So its more or less a preference considering most people wont keep there cars to 150k

Thanks.
I think I'll be switching to 10w-30 next oil change.
Even though I dont want to think about the rattles and squeaks these cars will have by 150k miles.
I found this article somewhat educating.

I use Mobil1 Full Syntetic 5w-30 and Mobil1 filter M1-113

hmmm... according to the info in that article that bigboy posted, going by that info the 5w-30 is BETTER than the 10w-30...
here's the 5w-30 data sheet:
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_5W-30.asp
here's the 10w-30 data sheet:
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_1_10W-30.asp
the 5w-30 has a higher viscosity index, and also a higher flash point - than the 10w-30... so judging them based on the info in that oil article, the 5w-30 would be better and offer more protection than the 10w.
I'll stick with my Mobil 1 - 5w-30.... ;)

with mobil one synthetic, how long are you going in between oil changes? 5000, 7500???? or more?
Thank you.

I go about 6000... and the oil life monitor still reads around 30% - 35% at that point... but I change it anyway...

Since I only have 3900 miles on my monte since June 20, 2007, I change my oil every 3 months,
I would not go any longer then 3k miles or 3 months. IMHO.

If you use synthetic, changing it at 3mo/3k miles is a big waste. You can EASILY go 6mo/6k miles.
If you don't believe me, send the oil off for a UOA at 3k miles and see what the experts have to say. Google blackstone labs, they're one of the prefered labs out there, and IIRC, it's like $18 to get your oil analized.

i was under the impression you could 5,000+ without any problems....i will shoot for 5 - 6,000 and go from there.

You can actually go alot longer than that on synthetic if you really wanted to. Although I do mine at 5000 miles regardless with Mobil1.

Theres a website where this guy devoted to testing mobile 1 synthetic and having it tested every 1000 miles and shows that it retains its properties even up to 10000 miles with just filling it up from oil consumption.

Read this http://www.motor-oil-engineers.com/?hop=0. Your car can go longer then 3000 miles.

I would rather pay alittle more and be safe then to go longer.
Ive done it in all my 3 monte's and ever once did I have any issues with them.
Its just like flushing out your coolant system every 2 years or 20k miles and having them drop the trans filter pan, replace the filter and fluids. Its those little things that make a HUGE difference in these cars.
But also remember, my total milage on my car is over 3900, and I have had her for a year now, so every 3 months is gold to me.
