Default What makes a camshaft "lopey"?

I previously had a 224/224 .563/.563 114LSA cam. It sounded wicked. But I put on a blower and so I switched to a "blower" cam (218/224 .527/.534 LSA). I was worried that the new cam wouldn't sound as aggressive since it was "smaller." But lo and behold, it sounds even worse!
In that case, what is that really makes a cam sound "old-school"?

I bet it has a narrower LSA than your previous cam with the 114 LSA.

Overlap is what makes a cam "lumpy." The narrower the LSA and/or the more total duration you have, the more overlap you have.

i think that split duration might have something to do with that. i ran a 222/230 on a 114 before and it sounded nasty, now with the tr224 its kinda calm.

Sorry I forgot to put the LSA for the second cam. It is the same: 114.
In this case, maybe its the split duration. Because even though the lift and duration are smaller, I swear this cam sounds nastier.

Lobe Separation is the main contributing factor to the lope. The tighter the separation (lower numerically) the more it will lope. But as you have seen duration plays a role as well.

So would a 230/234 .560/.580 112 lope hard?...I hope!!

It is the overlap that gives a cam its lope, but there are several factors that determine overlap. Cam duration, LSA, and ramp design. In your case, you probably went to a cam with less steep ramps so you wound up with more overlap. If the ramps had been the same, the new cam would have had less lope since the LSA is the same and it has less duration. Another factor is simply idle speed; maybe your engine is set to a lower idle speed than before.

The fact that it's a dual pattern cam won't make it lope harder, just a little rougher, if that makes sense.
